Armor is a set of equipable defense items that reduce damage taken from enemies and most other damage sources. Armor pieces are equipped by placing them in the Armor slots of the player's inventory. Armor can also be placed in vanity slots to change the player's appearance without affecting stats.
Each piece of armor has a defense statistic that reduces inflicted damage by half its value, rounded up. For example, a full set of Copper armor provides a total of 6 defense, reducing damage by 3 points. Silver armor has a total of 13 defense, reducing damage by 7 points, after having been rounded up. An attack cannot be reduced to zero; all attacks will always deal at least 1 damage, regardless of the quality of a player's armor.
In addition to the defense provided by individual Armor pieces, most Armor types provide a 'Set Bonus' when all three pieces of the same Armor type are worn simultaneously. For the basic pre-Hardmode Ore armors (Copper, Iron, Silver, Gold, Tin, Lead, Tungsten and Platinum), this is an additional defense bonus. More advanced or unique Armors can provide other specialized set bonuses (e.g. the Shroomite Armor will provide invisibility when not moving).

Overview
- Terrariaarmor13.png
Overview of armor statistics as of 1.3 (click to enlarge).
Notes
- The chestplate on each armor set changes with the gender of the character, with the female chestplate often having an open neck.
- There are a total of 56 (Template:Desktop icon) / 53 (Template:Console icon Template:Mobile icon) sets of armor, not including helmet/chestplate variations. With helmet/chestplate variations, there are 79 (Template:Desktop icon) / 73 (Template:Console icon Template:Mobile icon) sets of armor.
- The default Hardmode ore armors (Cobalt, Mythril, and Adamantite) are often mistaken as direct downgrades to the others (Palladium, Orichalcum, and Titanium). Though it is true they all have lower armor value (with the exception of Adamantite) and don't have fancy effects, they often give better, more class-specific bonuses (e.g. Cobalt Melee Set is still the second best melee speed armor only bested by the Hallowed Melee Set). The default Hardmode ore armor also do not require as many bars to create, making swift progression easier.
- The Hardmode metals, Hallowed and Chlorophyte helmet variants sell for more than their respective set due to that helmet holding the certain capabilities (Example: melee holds most defense and all melee modifiers).
