The Portal Gun is an item dropped by the Moon Lord. It launches projectiles capable of creating up to two portals (one via LMB, the other via RMB). These two portals are linked; any player that touches one will be instantly transported to the other one, without losing momentum.

While selected, the Portal Gun will alter the player's physics: maximum fall speed * 3.5 (from 51MPH to 179MPH) and horizontal momentum/inertia is kept while in the air. This effect is also applied if the last entity that affected the player's fall was a portal.

Portal demo provided by the developers in the days leading up to 1.3's release.

Notes

  • The Portal Gun has a range of 1400-1500 blocks.
  • If the player attempts to use the Portal Gun with an object, such as a chest, they will fire a second portal slightly before opening the chest, thus rendering them unable to move any items and ruining their portal placement at the same time.
  • Despite being a tool, the Portal Gun cannot be placed on a weapon rack.
  • In multiplayer, everyone's portals are different colors.
  • If you gain enough momentum, you can sometimes use the Portal Gun to fire yourself through walls.
  • The portals won't work on enemies, so advanced arenas compiled around the portal gun won't work, although Portal Gun will still work on NPCs.
  • Portals close on death.
  • The Portal Gun alone does not block fall damage, but traveling through a portal will reset fall damage taken.
  • Teleporting quickly shifts the viewpoint instead of instantly setting it to the destination point if the two portals are within viewable distance of eachother.
  • Portals close if the player gets around 1600 feet away from them.
  • You cannot travel through portals while riding a mount.
  • The increased fall speed does not work while riding a mount.

Tips

  • You can use the Portal Gun to create a wall that only you can travel through, which can be very useful for events such as the solar eclipse, blood moon, etc.
  • By using the Ice Rod,you can create a flat surface where you can shoot your portals on, thus making it easier to create portals anywhere.
  • Using the Portal Gun in combination with Frozen Slime Blocks and falling, you can achieve the fastest horizontal speed possible which is also 179 MPH.
  • You can speed yourself up using a ground-to-p ceiling portal loop, but only if the loop is at least 26 blocks tall. Otherwise, you will slow down.
  • Unlike in the game Portal and Portal 2 you cannot pick items up with the Operational end of the Device.
  • The Portal Gun can be used to traverse "hellevators" in seconds due to the increased fall speed.

Trivia

  • The Portal Gun is a direct reference to the Portal video game series by the Valve Corporation in which it is the main weapon/tool.
  • Using the platform stairs trick to move through 1-block walls, you can enter a portal from the back side and still come out the front of the other portal.
  • In singleplayer the color of the portal that you shoot is the opposite of the color that it would have in the game Portal. While in Terraria left-click is orange and right-click is cyan, in the original game left-click is cyan and right-click is orange.
