Coins are Terraria's unit of currency. They are primarily used for NPC transactions, though other players may also accept them as payment in multiplayer. Coins can also be used as ammunition for the Coin Gun. There are currently 4 types of Coins: Copper, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.

Coins can be acquired via several methods, such as killing enemies, breaking pots, looting chests, opening Crates, mining coin stashes, or trading with NPCs or other players. They can also be awarded randomly by the Angler or an Extractinator. Despite Coins appearing as the materials "Copper", "Silver", "Gold" or "Platinum", it is impossible to craft them from Ore, Bars, or any other item (apart from other Coins).

The coin value an enemy drops upon death is calculated from fixed values in the game code, with some random variation.

Crafting
Coins can be "crafted" by hand, which combines or splits them into other denominations. Each coin is worth 100 of its lesser denomination (Copper -> Silver -> Gold -> Platinum). When picked up, Coins are automatically combined into their higher denomination, if possible. For example, if the player picks 100 Silver Coins, they'll end up with one Gold Coin in their inventory instead. Similarly, a player holding 96 silver coins picking up another 15 will give them a gold coin and 11 silver coins.

Death penalty
Upon player death in Softcore Mode (the default mode), half of all of the stacks of coins in a player's inventory are dropped, rounded up to the nearest whole coin. For example, if the player possesses 1 Gold Coin in one stack, it will be dropped. If it is instead 10 coins, 5 will be dropped.

* Upon player death in Mediumcore or Hardcore Mode, all coins are dropped, regardless of how the player died.

* Being killed by a player-wielded weapon will not cause the player to drop any coins in Softcore Mode, even if recently damaged by an enemy.

* Other forms of suicide that can occur by accident, such as Fall Damage or Chaos State, will cause coins to drop.

Storage
Inside the player's Inventory, Coins have their own special set of 4 slots on the right of the inventory grid, similar to Ammo.

Like other items, Coins can be stored in storage items like Chests. Storing coins prevents their loss upon death in Softcore mode. It is generally helpful to store coins in a portable storage item, once you gain access to one. This prevents other players from taking your coins in multiplayer, and prevents coin loss upon death.

pc icon Coins can also be stored by simply placing them on the ground (on blocks), or on a furniture item that accepts item placement. This creates a Coin Pile. This is not as useful in multiplayer, as any other player will be able to pick these up.

Tips
* Coins stored in the trash slot will not be dropped upon death. This is a good way to store your highest value coins if you feel you are about to die. You can then take it out of the trash slot when you respawn. If you accidentally place something else in the trash, though, the coins will be lost.

Trivia
* mobile icon In the mobile version, Platinum coins have a different texture. They are light purple-blue, and more shiny.

* In the mobile version, coins have their damage values (from a Coin Gun) listed, and are listed as ammo.

* Purchasing every NPC item requires:
