Based upon a real-life person: Guy Fawkes (13 April 1570 – 31 January 1606), also known as Guido Fawkes, the name he adopted while fighting for the Spanish in the Low Countries, who was a member of a group of provincial English Catholics who planned the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Guy Fawkes Night is a holiday (on November 5th) in Great Britain, where people may wear Guy Fawkes Masks.
Guy Fawkes Masks became famous recently thanks to the comic book and movie, V for Vendetta, where a political extremist calling himself "V" fights an oppressive government while wearing a Guy Fawkes Mask, in a nod to Guy Fawkes' plot to destroy the government.
