Desert Fossil is a type of block found in the Underground Desert biome in medium to large veins. In the PC version, Console version, Mobile version, and tModLoader version, Desert Fossil can be mined with an Iron Pickaxe or equivalent/higher mining level, or with explosives. However, adjacent fossil blocks have a chance to crumble away and drop nothing. In Old Chinese version and tModLoader 1.3-Legacy version, mining it requires either a Nightmare or Deathbringer Pickaxe or higher, and it cannot be destroyed with explosives.
Desert Fossils can be used with an Extractinator to produce Sturdy Fossils, along with the normal Extractinator drops. Desert Fossils produce more Amber than Silt or Slush do. There is a 0.06*1/1666 (0.06%) chance that an Amber Mosquito (Baby Dinosaur pet) will be produced (the odds are 0.02*1/5000 (0.02%) for Silt and Slush).
Notes
Beating the Eater of Worlds or the Brain of Cthulhu to get the Nightmare or Deathbringer Pickaxe is not necessary, as the Reaver Shark can be obtained early by fishing in the ocean.Desert Fossils do not appear highlighted under the effects of a Spelunker Potion.
