Black Slimes are a variety of slime that only spawn in the Cavern layer. When a Black Slime attacks, it has a chance to inflict the Darkness debuff, which decreases the radius that light sources will illuminate, making it more difficult to see.

Just like many other slimes, Black Slimes become passive around the player when they have the Royal Gel accessory equipped.

On the  PC version, they can rarely be found carrying bonus drops, which the player receives on the slime's death.

Notes

• Similar to Mother and Baby Slimes, the Black Slime blends slightly with the background of the Cavern layer, making it difficult to detect. As such, it can often catch players off-guard.
• It is possible to obtain Black Slimes in your Slime hutch. After obtaining at least 1 slime within your Slime hutch, a rare event may occur in which the "witch" rare event will occur with her casting a spell over your slime hutch. This spell changes all slimes within your Slime Hutch regardless of color to black slimes.

Tips

• Using a Hunter Potion can be used to detect Black Slimes, as the slime will turn red (Template:Pc icon 1.2.3) or green (Template:Console icon) in the dark.
• Using a Night Owl Potion can counter the Darkness debuff Black Slimes inflict.
