Events (also known as Invasions) are temporary occasions where varieties of special enemies spawn, most at elevated spawn rates, even near NPCs, and attack players. Some events can occur randomly during gameplay, while others can be triggered via certain summoning items or special circumstances. Events spawn their own unique enemies not seen during ordinary gameplay, which can, in turn, drop unique items that are only obtainable within the event. Some events also bring unique visuals and a unique atmosphere, such as an altered Moon and noticeable shaders applied to the screen. Events also are accompanied by their own special music, adding on to their theme. Depending on the particular event, they may last until a certain time limit is reached, or until a certain number of enemies are defeated.
On the PC version, Console version, Mobile version, Old Chinese version, tModLoader version, and tModLoader 1.3-Legacy version, a progress bar can be seen in the bottom right corner of the screen to indicate how far the player has gone into the event, and how far they are from completing it. It only appears during invasion-style events (Goblin Army, Slime Rain (only if 75/150 slimes are defeated), Old One's Army, Frost Legion, Pirate Invasion, Pumpkin Moon, Frost Moon, Martian Madness, and Lunar Events) and will not appear during events that are supposed to last a certain amount of time (Blood Moon, Rain, Slime Rain (only if less than 75/150 slimes are killed), Sandstorm, and Solar Eclipse).
Note that invasions seem to require that at least one NPC is nearby; if an invasion's progress bar disappears beyond a certain distance, it may be necessary to place a house near the area. The game only checks horizontal distance to the NPC; you can house them far above or below your arena.
There are currently 14 () / 11 () / 8 () different events and invasions.
All of the events of Terraria except the Party event on the PC version, Console version, Mobile version, tModLoader version, and tModLoader 1.3-Legacy version, created to celebrate Terraria's 5th birthday, spawns unique enemies.
Pre-Hardmode
Blood Moon
The Blood Moon is an event that has a 1 in 9 (11.11%) chance of happening on every night (except new moons) as long as one player in the world has 120 health or more. A message saying: "The Blood Moon is rising..." is displayed when the event starts. During this event, the spawn rate of enemies and the maximum amount of enemies that can be on the screen at any time is increased. Enemies will also spawn near NPCs, even when they normally do not. It can be skipped using an Enchanted Sundial.
During a Blood Moon, Zombies and Werewolves can open doors after a few hits.
Special enemies spawn in addition to the usual enemies of the surface biome the players stands in. The following enemies spawn during a Blood Moon:
Events/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowIf the world is in Hardmode:
Events/rowDeathweed will also bloom during a Blood Moon. They can be found in the Corruption/Crimson even if it isn't a Blood Moon.
All water in the world aside from the ocean, Fish Bowls, and Water Fountains gain a blood red color, including Rain. It does this similarly to the Crimson Biome.
Goblin Army
The Goblin Army is an event that has a 1 in 3 chance of occurring every dawn if at least one Shadow Orb/Crimson Heart has been destroyed, at least one player has 200 health or more, and there is not a Goblin Invasion already in progress. It can also be summoned using a Goblin Battle Standard. Before the event starts the message: "A Goblin Army is approaching from the [east/west]!" will be displayed 1 (on small and medium worlds)/2 (on large worlds) time(s). When the Goblin Army is about to spawn around the player's spawn point, the message: "A Goblin Army has arrived!" will be displayed.
During the event, five (six during Hardmode on the Old Chinese version and tModLoader 1.3-Legacy version) different types of Goblins will spawn:
Events/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowIf the world is in Hardmode:
Events/row* Although they do not appear in the Goblin Invasion, Goblin Scouts can be found rarely on the outer thirds of the map. They drop Tattered Cloth which is used to make the summoning item for this event.
The "Boss 1" /'Goblin Army' theme plays during a Goblin Army.
When a certain number of enemies are defeated, the message: "The Goblin Army has been defeated!" will display.
After defeating the event for the first time, the Goblin Tinkerer will be able to spawn underground.
Rain
The most common event is Rain. Rain can occur in any surface biome, changing the theme music and background, as well as dimming the lighting. Goldfish walk on land, and some different enemies spawn. Once the rain has ended, the effects fade away and the affected biome returns to normal. Rain in a snow biome becomes a blizzard.
Enemies include:

Events/rowIn a Hardmode Snow Biome (Blizzard):
Events/rowSlime Rain
The Slime Rain is an event that has a random chance of occurring in a world, and the event starts when the message "Slime is falling from the sky!" is announced in chat. It can only appear, though, if the player has at least 140 health and 8 defense (except in Expert mode, where it can occur with a significantly decreased chance before meeting the criteria), in which after those criteria are met the random chance of occurring will be put into play. During this time, different variations of slimes fall from the sky constantly until the day or night is over. If the player kills 150 (75 if King Slime was previously defeated) slimes before the event naturally ends, King Slime will spawn. Once the event is over, the message "Slime has stopped falling from the sky." will be displayed in chat.
Many types of slimes spawn including:

Party
The Party is an event that takes place when a Party Center is active. When it occurs, all NPCs will wear a Party Hat (except the Tax Collector, Skeleton Merchant and Old Man). When the event ends, the message "Party time is over!" is announced in chat. The event will end at night (7:30 PM) in the game. A party has a random chance to occur at any dawn, without needing a Party Center near the involved NPCs. When NPCs initiate their own parties, any placed Party Center will activate, and a pink status message will display "Looks like [NPC name] & [NPC name] are throwing a party!" Sometimes only one NPC will throw a party and even three NPCs can throw a party. The pink status message will adapt to however many NPCs are throwing the party.
Sandstorm
Sandstorms occur randomly while the player is in a Desert and do not affect other biomes while active. During a sandstorm, the Mighty Wind debuff will be inflicted, pushing creatures afflicted with it in the direction of the wind, and particles will appear in the dusty yellow background. Sandstorms can also occur in Corrupted, Hallowed, or Crimson deserts.
In addition to regular Desert enemies, the following enemies will spawn:

Old One's Army
The Old One's Army is a unique Dungeon Defenders 2 crossover event that can be triggered by placing the Eternia Crystal on the Eternia Crystal Stand. The objective is to protect the Eternia Crystal from waves of enemies seeking to destroy it. If the Crystal is destroyed, the event terminates. If it is kept "alive" until all waves are cleared, the event is defeated.
Both the Crystal and its Stand are purchased from the Tavernkeep NPC for coins. Players are inflicted with the Creative Shock debuff for the duration of the event, which prevents the removal or placement of blocks during the entire event.
Each wave becomes progressively more difficult. When triggered before any Mechanical Bosses have been defeated, the event consists of 5 waves. If triggered after at least one Mechanical Boss is defeated, the event consists of 7 waves. Once Golem has been defeated, the event becomes even more difficult with the boss Betsy spawning in the final wave. Only one Betsy will spawn during each invasion and defeating it will complete the event. The event also contains 2 mini-bosses, the Ogre and the Dark Mage.
The following enemies are exclusive to the event:
Events/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowHardmode
Frost Legion
The Frost Legion is an event that functions similarly to the Goblin Army, but it requires an item to start the event, which is only attainable in Hardmode. During Christmas, enemies will drop presents. If the world is in Hardmode, these presents have a 1 in 13 chance of containing a Snow Globe, which is used to spawn the Frost Legion. Before the event starts, the message: "The Frost Legion is approaching from the [east/west]!" will display. When the Frost Legion is about to spawn around the players spawn point, the message: "The Frost Legion has arrived!" will be displayed.
During the event, three different types of unique snowmen will spawn:
Events/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowAll of the snowmen drop Snow blocks, technically granting the player a way to obtain infinite amounts of Snow.
When the Frost Legion have arrived, the "Boss 3" theme will play.
When the last wave of snowmen has spawned, the message: "The Frost Legion has been defeated!" will display.
After the Frost Legion has been defeated, the Santa Claus NPC will be available (Only in the Christmas period) and will move into an empty home. The Clothier will also sell the hats of the Snowman Gangsta and Balla.
Solar Eclipse
The Solar Eclipse is a rare Hardmode event that has a 1/20 chance to occur each day, as long as any Mechanical Boss has been defeated. It can also be summoned with a Solar Tablet on the PC version, Console version, Mobile version, Old Chinese version, tModLoader version, and tModLoader 1.3-Legacy version. A Solar Eclipse will be announced at dawn with the message "A Solar Eclipse is happening!". The sun will rise, obscured by the moon, dramatically reducing natural light to a level darker than night time. Normal biome enemy spawns are replaced with special enemies that can spawn near NPCs, and spawn much more frequently and in greater numbers than usual. On the PC version, Console version, Mobile version, Old Chinese version, tModLoader version, and tModLoader 1.3-Legacy version, it can be skipped using an Enchanted Sundial.
The enemies that spawn during a Solar Eclipse at the start of Hardmode are as follows:
Events/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowAfter all three Mechanical Bosses have been defeated
Events/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowAfter Plantera has been defeated:
Events/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowDuring the Solar Eclipse, its own special theme will play for the duration of the event.
The solar eclipse lasts for 1 in-game day. If summoned by the Solar Tablet, it will last for the day's remaining time when used.
Pirate Invasion
The Pirate Invasion is an event that is very similar to the Goblin Army. It can spawn randomly, or be summoned by the use of a Pirate Map, which can be obtained from killing any enemy in the Ocean biome during Hardmode. When activated, a message will warn all players that "Pirates are approaching from the [east/west]!" When the Pirate Invasion has reached the original spawn point, a message will send, saying "The Pirates have arrived!"
During the event, 7 / 6 different enemies themed around a pirate crew will spawn:
The music played during the event is the Golem/Pirate Invasion theme. On the PC version, Console version, Mobile version, Old Chinese version, Nintendo version, tModLoader version, and tModLoader 1.3-Legacy version, the Pirate Invasion now has its own track.
Upon defeating the Pirate Invasion, a message will appear stating that "The Pirates have been defeated!".
Defeating the Pirate Invasion unlocks the Pirate NPC, which resembles the Pirate Captain enemy. It will arrive during the day if the world has a suitable housing.
Pumpkin Moon
The Pumpkin Moon is a Halloween-themed event that can only be summoned at night with the Pumpkin Moon Medallion. Unlike most other events, the Pumpkin Moon takes place in distinct waves, each one preceded with the message "Wave [#]: [list of the monsters that will be spawning in the wave]". There is a total of 15 waves, which grow harder as the night wears on, culminating in the "Final Wave," which lasts for the remainder of the night. Later waves will contain multiple boss enemies, so it is not recommended for players to summon the Pumpkin Moon until they have end-game weapons and armor and well-reforged accessories. It can be skipped using an Enchanted Sundial, however, it could be considered a waste of resources.
The Pumpkin Moon has seven monsters, in increasing order of difficulty:
Events/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowThe Pumpkin Moon used the "Eclipse" music track but got its own in 1.2.1.2. Though there are no rewards for surviving the event, most (if not all) of the enemies can drop unique items, including Spooky Wood and equipment like the Spooky Hook and Raven Staff.
Frost Moon
The Frost Moon is a Christmas-themed event similar to the Pumpkin Moon that can only be summoned at night with the Naughty Present. It uses the same wave system as the Pumpkin Moon, with each new wave starting with the message "Wave [#]: [list of the monsters that will be spawning in the wave]". The Frost Moon also has an additional five "bonus waves" after the "Final Wave", making the max wave count to 20. Enemies have similar behavior to Pumpkin Moon counterparts, but are tougher, making this event the hardest on the Mobile and versions. On the PC and Console versions, this event has been beaten by the Martian Madness and Lunar Events as of 1.3.0.1. It can be skipped using an Enchanted Sundial, however, it would be considered a waste of resources.
It has 11 types of enemies:
Events/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowIts own special theme will play during the event.
Martian Madness
The Martian Madness event is a post-Golem event. It is unique from the others in that in order to start it you must find a Martian Probe randomly in the outer parts of the surface and space levels of the world and move into its light. Once you're discovered by a Martian Probe, it will float away and, if not destroyed by the time it leaves the screen, it will initiate the Martian Madness event, displaying the message "Martians are invading!". If you do not wish to unintentionally begin the event, it is recommended to destroy the Probe immediately. The Martian Madness event has enemies as follows:
Events/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowEvents/rowThe Martian Madness event has its own theme that it plays during the duration of the event.
Once the last wave of Martians has spawned and been defeated, a message will appear stating that "The Martians have been defeated!".
Lunar Events
The Lunar Events start after defeating the Lunatic Cultist boss. The message saying "Celestial creatures are invading!" indicates the beginning of the events. This is a unique event that spawns four different pillars, spread evenly across your world. These pillars spawn similarly-colored enemies that invade your world. There are four different pillars: the Solar Pillar, the Vortex Pillar, the Nebula Pillar, and the Stardust Pillar. All of them drop shards, which are used to craft endgame gear. Each has the same amount of health and is surrounded with a protective barrier. The Moon Lord will spawn around 1 minute, or 1 in-game hour after the completion of this event.

There was originally plans for an "Aquarian Horde" Event. However, Duke Fishron still made its way in.
