The printable version is no longer supported and may have rendering errors. Please update your browser bookmarks and please use the default browser print function instead.

The default controls are listed below. These can be changed from the Controls menu in Settings on the Title Screen.

  • To right click on a mac without a right click button you need to put two fingers on the trackpad before you click to make the same effect as a right click.

  • Tosses the currently selected item a few squares in the direction the character is facing. Does not inflict throwing damage; this is "throw (discard)", not "throw (attack)". To perform "throw (attack)" with a ranged/throwing weapon such as shurikens or a bow, do not use this command; instead, click the left mouse button with the item equipped, same as with melee attacks. You can also throw items by opening the inventory, picking the item you want to throw away and and right-clicking outside the inventory while that item is hold on the cursor. Note that throwing throws the whole stack of items, except for torches, where only one torch will be thrown.
Esc/△/Y Inventory
  • Opens the inventory and crafting interface (allowing the player to Save and Quit (singleplayer) or Disconnect (multiplayer). If autopause has been enabled the game will pause when this action is performed. Autopause is currently not available on console. Press Start on Xbox or PS3 to pause the game (This won't open your inventory).

  • Pressing Space while jumping will activate the ability of jumping items like Spectre Boots, Sandstorm in a Bottle, etc.
  • Holding Space with Wings armed will allow you to fly for some period (depending on the Wings used), and glide slowly to the ground.
0-9/ L2+R2/LT+RT Hotbar Hotkey
  • Selects an item from the hotbar (1 being the leftmost, and 0 being the rightmost). The hotbar is the uppermost row of the inventory, i.e. the top 10 slots. (The item is merely selected; to actually use it click the left mouse button after making a selection.)

J Quick Mana Heal
  • Consumes the first mana healing item in your inventory (starting from the top left).
  • When resetting default controls, will change to 'M' instead of 'J', as M was the default mana heal key before Terraria 1.2.
M/Select/Back Full-Screen Map
  • The M key, by default, brings up a full-screen map. This can be zoomed in and out with the keyboard just as the minimap can, or with the mouse wheel, and it can be scrolled using the directional keys or by dragging it with the mouse. The full-screen map can be dismissed by clicking the icon at the bottom left corner, or by pressing M or the inventory key again. On Console, it will also show all players and let you select your team.
B Quick Buff
  • Consumes one of each type of Buff Potion in your inventory.
  • Buff Potions will not be consumed if a buff of the same type is still active.
E/L1/LT Grapple
Shift Auto Select
  • It will try to select the appropriate tool to interact with the object under the cursor (excepting walls), or a light source if the cursor is too far or no tool was found. The light source will be the first valid one in the inventory (e.g.: A glowstick while underwater).
Tab Minimap
  • Tab toggles the minimap between the three modes: portrait, overlay, and hidden. See Map for more details.
Ctrl/R3/Press down right thumbstick Change cursor mode
  • Changes cursor mode between Auto and Manual.
D-Pad Use bound item
  • Items can be bound to the D-pad by opening the inventory, selecting an item and pressing a direction on the D-pad. That item can then be equipped in the hotbar immediately by pressing that direction on the D-pad during gameplay (Console only).

  • To interact with openable items, torches, water candle or waterbolt spell in dungeon, right click on it.
