m (Undo revision 1120359 by 99.2.49.111 (talk) It is already mentioned that the tooltip references Gladiator. After a quick internet search, the line does seem to be very well known as a quote from that movie, not from Ben Hur. It also makes more sense given the similarities of the names. So unless there's a developer statement on the matter, Gladiator is the obvious reference.)

Gladius (demo)

The Gladius in action.

The Gladius is a pre-Hardmode shortsword dropped by Hoplites with a 2.5*1/40 (2.5%) chance. It is one of the strongest shortswords in the game, surpassing the highest pre-Hardmode tier ore-based shortswords (Platinum Shortsword and Gold Shortsword). Unlike other shortswords, it attacks three times in quick succession per use, with slightly varying angles with each stab.

Its best modifier is Legendary.

Tips

  • Its rapid speed at close range makes it a useful weapon in the early game and an upgrade to the Gold/Platinum Shortsword.

Trivia

  • The Gladius can be considered the Pre-Hardmode version of the Starlight, due to its similar attack style.
  • The tooltip is a reference to the 2000 epic historical drama movie Gladiator.
  • Gladius is Latin for sword, and was commonly used by Roman foot soldiers and gladiators.
