The graveyard is a new mini-biome added in the 1.4.0.1 update, created whenever there are at least five Tombstones in close enough proximity. They are marked by background effects including heavy fog, dulled colors, and even lightning when enough graves accumulate. Graveyards cause Ghosts and Ravens to spawn, and also allow nighttime enemies such as Zombies and Demon Eyes to spawn during daytime.

A graveyard Biome

A graveyard with eight tombstones

When six Tombstones are placed more zombies, ghosts, and demon eyes will spawn and allow Maggot Zombies to spawn.

Notes

  • It is advisable to avoid letting graves accumulate around one's base during the early game (especially in Expert and Master mode), as the Ghosts spawned have high health and damage output compared to starting characters, and the player will be bothered by Zombies and Demon Eyes, even during daytime.
  • In a graveyard, certain NPCs will sell graveyard-exclusive items and certain recipes will be unlocked, such as the Gravedigger's Shovel.
  • Sunflowers do not affect the player when in a Graveyard.
  • A large amount of mist coats surfaces in graveyard biomes, which can obscure items like pressure plates.
  • The visual effect of the mist can be toggled on and off with the "Blood and Gore" setting.
  • Despite that the Eye of Cthulhu is a night enemy, the Suspicious Looking Eye will not work in the Graveyard.
