Template:Summoned

The Imp Staff is a summon weapon that spawns a miniature flying imp character that follows the player and fires three fireballs at enemies. Fireballs always inflict the On Fire! debuff, and can pierce multiple enemies. Like other minions, the summoned imp is invincible and follows the player for an unlimited amount of time, unless the player dies, summons a replacement minion, or cancels the buff.

Its best Modifier is Ruthless. The Mythical modifier provides the widest array of stats bonuses, but these primarily affect the initial summon rather than the resulting minion. Additionally, Minions cannot deal critical hits. The only significant advantage a Mythical Imp Staff has over a Ruthless one is knockback.

Notes

  • Relative to other Minions, the Imp's behavior is somewhat erratic. Its fire rate is usually relatively low, but on random rare occasions it fires rapid bursts of two to five projectiles. It will also tend to return to the player's position often, before enemies have been defeated; unlike other Minions, which tend to remain at enemy positions until all are killed.
  • While the imp can fly through water, its fireball projectiles cannot travel through water. They stop at the water's surface, and will not appear at all when the imp is within water. The imp will still attempt to fire at underwater enemies.
  • It is a very useful pre-Hardmode summoning weapon because of its low cost for crafting and high damage.
  • Having an extra AI-controlled creature constantly targeting enemies significantly increases your damage output, and makes the average exploring experience much easier. The imp can even target enemies slightly off-screen, although it will not target enemies that are in an area you cannot target yourself (behind a door, in another cavern area, etc.).

Tips

  • Compared to the Hornet Staff, the Imp's overall fire rate is low, but its attacks are more damaging, its inflicted debuff is stronger, and its projectiles travel at much higher velocity, in addition to having a pierce ability. The Imp cannot attack underwater enemies, while the Hornet can.
  • Since the minion constantly follows you until you die, there's no need to keep the Imp Staff with you. It may be stored in a chest near your spawn point for easy re-summoning, but you also lose the ability to hit enemies through walls by summoning an imp in that location.
