The Music Box is a Hardmode accessory that is purchased from the Wizard for 10. When the Music Box is equipped in an accessory slot, it will record the currently playing game music after a randomized delay and alerts the player with a record sound. This includes tracks being played by other Music Boxes. Once recorded, it will change into one of the Music Boxes listed below.
A recorded Music Box can be played back in one of two ways:
- Equipping it as an accessory.
- Placing it as furniture and activating it, either by the ⚷ Interact button or with wires.
There are currently 88 / 42 / 34 different Music Boxes available.
On the Nintendo version, the Music Box was made unobtainable because it was unstable. The same was true of pre-1.3.0.7 Mobile versions.

Notes[]
- A Music Box will not record if the game's music volume is set to 0.
- A Music Box will always sell for 2, regardless of whether it has recorded anything.
- Activating a recorded Music Box that has been placed will cause all players in the vicinity to hear its music.
- Music Boxes will record other placed Music Boxes. This is useful if multiple music boxes are required for a large area.
- Music Boxes actual range is relative to your resolution size.
- On 1920x1080 resolution, the range is ~180 feet. (Measured with in game compass.)
- On 1680x1050 resolution, the range is ~165 feet.
- On 1600x600 and 1600x1024 resolution, the range is ~160 feet.
- On 1440x900 resolution, the range is ~150 feet.
- On 1366x768 resolution, the range is ~145.5 feet.
- On 1360x768 resolution, the range is ~145 feet.
- On 1280x720, 1280x768, 1280x800, 1280x960 and 1280x1024 resolution, the range is ~140 feet.
- On 1176x664 resolution, the range is ~133.5 feet.
- On 1152x864 resolution, the range is ~132 feet.
- On 1024x768 resolution, the range is ~124 feet.
- On 800x600 resolution, the range is ~110 feet.
- The Title Music Box is crafted with "Overworld Day." It cannot be crafted with "Alt Overworld Day". It must also be crafted with "Underground," not "Alt Underground".
- The Title Music Box cannot be crafted in Crimson worlds, as the recipe was made before the Crimson was introduced. However, it is possible to use another world that has Corruption in it, or (
) to purchase Corrupt Seeds from the Dryad by housing her in a Graveyard in Hardmode. - While the Title, Journey's Beginning, Alt Title, and Day Remix Music Boxes have to be crafted first, they can be recorded, along with any other Music Box.
- Unlike most equipped accessories, an equipped Music Box is not visible on the player.
- A Music Box will not record when equipped in a vanity accessory slot or when it is inside an inventory slot. They can, however, be listened to when recorded.
- It can take up to 10 minutes for a Music Box to record a song.
The Music Box is currently not obtainable. Although it can be added via inventory editors, it is not fully coded (resulting in unexpected appearance), and will disappear upon being equipped, or upon leaving the world.- Music Boxes can, in fact, be reforged and have modifiers. It is possible (though relatively rare) for a Music Box to get a random modifier after being recorded, but you can alternatively use the Goblin Tinkerer's reforge function.
- Music Boxes can also receive a random modifier if they had a pre-existing modifier and were placed down and picked back up. This will only work with Music Boxes that had a modifier before being placed and will not work with normal Music Boxes (meaning Music Boxes that did not have a modifier before being placed).
- On the PC version, Console version, Mobile version, and tModLoader version, Music Boxes introduced from 1.3.0.1 and onward can receive a modifier from the Goblin Tinkerer, or when they are crafted. They will lose their prefix when placed, however.
- Despite the Console version having a 50% chance to play the Nintendo version Ocean/Space music, those versions of Music Boxes are unobtainable in the Console version. If the player tries to record the old Ocean/Space music, the Music Box disappears from their accessory slot. However, it is still possible to record the PC Ocean/Space music.Verify
- When playing back the Space Music Box, there is still a 50% chance of playing the old music. The same is true for the Ocean Music Box.
- The console exclusive Space and Ocean tracks have since been integrated into the game and official soundtrack as "Space Day" and "Ocean Night" respectively.
- The Journey's end music box behaves differently depending on if it is equipped in a social slot or accessory slot. Equipping it in a social slot only plays the music while equipping it in an accessory slot plays the full credits sequence.
- The Journey's end music box can be obtained by equipping an empty music box during the credits sequence or by purchasing it from the Princess after defeating the Moon Lord.
Tips[]
- Event and boss music may take multiple attempts to record, due to the random time required. Stretching these encounters for maximum time offers a better chance at a successful recording.
- Despite the fact that you need the music to be turned on for recording Music Boxes, you can always turn off the system's volume, which the game can't detect.
Trivia[]
- The total amount of money needed to buy one of every Music Box is −190 / −180 / −190 / −180, plus the craftable ones
120 /170. - The Music Box (Tutorial) was initially crafted with Console-/Mobile-exclusive Music Boxes. With the exception of the Music Box (Tutorial) itself, these Music Boxes are no longer exclusive, as of 1.2.
- Prior to 1.3.0.1
, the Music Box (Title) required the most number of ingredients of any crafting recipe in the game. - The twelve music boxes required to craft Music Box (Title) contain the twelve tracks that were present as of the 1.1 update - originally the game's entire soundtrack. Its recipe remained unchanged as new tracks were added in 1.2 and beyond.
- The six music boxes required to craft Music Box (Alt Title) reference the songs that were originally exclusive to Terraria's console editions. The Desert, Ice, and Boss 5 themes were integrated into the desktop version with the 1.2 update, with the remainder being integrated in 1.4.
- The twelve music boxes needed to craft Music Box (Journey's Beginning) contain the twelve original tracks composed for the 1.4 update.
- Despite being unrelated to the Pirate Invasion event, the Music Box (Boss 4) resembles the golden furniture dropped by most pirate enemies. This is because Boss 4 was the original theme to the Pirate Invasion prior to 1.3.
- The Music Box (Corruption) and the Music Box (Eerie) have identical designs, apart from color. The same is true for the Music Box (Martian Madness) and the Music Box (Lunar Boss), as well as the Music Box (Boss 1) and the Music Box (Dungeon).
- In the Console version the Music Box (Tutorial) is classified as a crafting material. It is the only craftable item out of the old-gen-exclusive items.
- The Otherworldly music boxes are tracks from the cancelled "Terraria: Otherworld".
- The "Morning Rain" Music box is a recycle of the Tutorial level song used in Console and pre-1.3 Mobile versions. Otherwise you can get the original tutorial song on console version, as in there still is the music box. The same goes to Space Day and Ocean Night, but the music boxes in Console version are the same as the normal post-1.3 Desktop/Mobile Space and Ocean music boxes.
- As of 1.4.0.1, The Sandstorm Music Box's sprite has been redesigned and it is very similar to the Storm and Windy Day music boxes' sprite.
- As of 1.4.0.5, the Journey's End music box was replaced with Journey's Beginning, but in the 1.4.1 update, it was added back.
