Onyx Blaster (demo)

The Onyx Blaster in action.

The Onyx Blaster is a Hardmode ranged weapon that fires a spread of 4 bullets while only consuming one unit of ammunition, and a single dark energy projectile that explodes upon impact with an enemy or a block, or after traveling for 40 ticks[1][2] (0.67 seconds; 35 tiles). The explosive projectile does 48 / 56 base damage, twice the listed damage of the weapon.

The Onyx Blaster is a direct upgrade to the Shotgun. It can be crafted before defeating any of the mechanical bosses.

Its best modifier is Unreal.

Tips[]

  • The Onyx Blaster is a particularly effective weapon for the point in the game at which it can be acquired. Its ingredients are not hard to farm, and it can be used to good effect in much of the early Hardmode content, being an excellent candidate against the mechanical bosses and even being capable of holding its own against later bosses such as the Golem and Duke Fishron.
  • It can one-shot many common Hardmode enemies, and the explosion is particularly devastating against worms, being capable of one-shotting anything up to and including a Dune Splicer or dramatically speed up the fight against The Destroyer. One can further increase its potential by crafting Exploding Bullets.
  • Using a combination of this weapon, the Megashark, and the Endless Musket Pouch could be helpful in maximizing crowd control.
  • Using certain bullets, most notably Explosive Bullets, will cause the enemy hit by the weapon to receive immunity frames and thus allow the dark energy projectile to pass through the enemy without detonating. This can be useful when used for crowd control, such as piercing through Goblin Warriors to explode on groups of Archers or individual Sorcerers during an early Hardmode goblin invasion.
    • However, it also may negatively affect performance against single targets, and other bullets, such as Cursed Bullets, are recommended due to their high damage and availability in early hardmode, as well as the Cursed Inferno debuff they inflict. It is still recommended to use exploding bullets against the destroyer, but it likely won't be carrying them for use in normal gameplay.

Trivia[]

Onyx Blast

A close up of the onyx blast.

  • Onyx is a mineral commonly found around the world, and the name "Onyx Blaster" might be coming from both the stone and weapon being black, or from the projectile looking similar to unrefined onyx.
    • Despite being named Onyx Blaster, no onyx is used to craft the weapon, nor does onyx exist in Terraria.
  • This is one of a small "set" of weapons made with two Shards apiece, the other members being the Sky Fracture and the Dao of Pow. Their recipes, names and appearances link the weapons to themes of Darkness, Light, and Balance, with the Onyx Blaster representing Darkness. The set also includes one weapon for each of the three "classic" damage types (melee, magic, and ranged), where the Onyx Blaster is the ranged weapon.
  • According to Yoraiz0r, the design of the Onyx Blaster was directly inspired by the dark, "evil" half of Monokuma, the main antagonist of the Japanese video game series "Danganronpa".[3]
  • It is one of two firearms in Terraria to feature an operating secondary weapon, the other being the Vortex Beater.
  • The purple stripes on the Onyx Blaster appear to glow while being used, reminiscent of a heat vent.

History[]

  • Desktop 1.4.1:
    • Damage decreased from 28 to 24.
    • Use time increased from 45 to 48.
