Pre-Hardmode is a default world given to the player once a world has been generated. To generate a world go to "Single player" then "Create world."
To deactivate Pre-Hardmode and proceed to Hardmode, the player must defeat the Wall of Flesh.
For information on the best items to have Pre-Hardmode, please use the Checklist
Pre-Hardmode Items
These are all the Items you can obtain before reaching Hardmode.
Pre-Hardmode Tools
Tools are items that the player uses to produce an effect in the world, rather than creating a Block or planting a plant. Some are used to dismantle World tiles, such as Blocks, Walls, or freeing placed items, to convert them into carryable objects. Pickaxes, axes, and hammers can also be used as melee weapons, although they generally offer less damage than actual Weapons of corresponding tiers.
Pre-Hardmode Pickaxes
Pickaxes are tools that can be used to pick up most terrain blocks. They may also be used to remove grass, and destroy planted tree saplings. Their tier defines the type of blocks that can be mined as well as the number of hits it takes to remove a single block.
Pre-Hardmode Axes
Axes are only used to cut down trees, cacti, and giant mushrooms. Wood and Wooden platforms have to be removed with a pickaxe. Chainsaws function the same as regular axes, while Hamaxes function as both Axes and Hammers.

Bosses
King Slime
|
For strategies on how to defeat the King Slime, see Guide:King Slime strategies.
The King Slime is a giant blue slime with 2000 health. It is summoned with a Slime Crown, and can also rarely appear in the outer thirds of the map completely by itself. As with all monsters that can spawn naturally, the King Slime has a better chance of spawning while standing near a placed Water Candle or under the effects of a Battle Potion. The King Slime is a good challenge for a beginning player, and can be easily defeated by tactical use of terrain. The King Slime does not provide access to game-advancing items upon defeat, but will drop one Gold Coin and one piece of Ninja clothes. |
Eye of Cthulhu
|
For strategies on how to defeat the Eye of Cthulhu, see Guide:Eye of Cthulhu strategies.
The Eye of Cthulhu will have a 1 in 3 chance to spawn at the start of every night, once the player has 200 HP or more, and 3 or more NPCs living in houses and over 10 Defense, and will continue to do so until defeated for the first time. It can also be summoned using a Suspicious Looking Eye at night. Since this Boss can spawn randomly without deliberate action by the player, it is often the first Boss the player must face. It is also considered the easiest Boss to defeat, although some people think the Eater of Worlds is easier. The Eye of Cthulhu is still a significant challenge, especially to newer players. It travels through blocks, and spawns Servants of Cthulhu. |
Eater of Worlds
|
For strategies on how to defeat the Eater of Worlds, see Guide:Eater of Worlds strategies.
The Eater of Worlds will appear every time you shatter three Shadow Orbs. These orbs are found in the Corruption, surrounded by Ebonstone. Ebonstone requires a Pickaxe with 65% power or higher to mine, though you can also use Explosives or Purification Powder. Once you are close, shadow orbs can be destroyed with a Hammer. The Eater of Worlds can also be summoned with the Worm Food. The Eater of Worlds can only be summoned in the corruption, and if it manages to get out of the corruption, it will flee and disappear. The Eater of Worlds can be a challenge even for intermediate players, as it is a large Worm enemy that travels through tiles, and is made up of multiple sections that can each attack separately (with separate heads, no less) when they are cut off. To defeat this boss, every section must be brought down to less than two body parts to be killed (the smallest possible section is a head and a tail with no body pieces). Due to how helpful corrupted items are, the EoW will probably be the second boss faced in worlds that have corruption, rather than Crimson. The Eater of Worlds is the only source of Shadow Scales in the game, and drops a large amount of Demonite Ore. |
Brain of Cthulhu
|
For strategies on how to defeat Brain of Cthulhu, see Guide:Brain of Cthulhu strategies.
The Brain of Cthulhu will appear every time you shatter three Demon Hearts. These hearts are found in the Crimson, surrounded by Crimstone. Crimstone requires a Pickaxe with 65% power or higher to mine, though you can also use Explosives or Purification Powder. Once you are close, demon hearts can be destroyed with a Hammer. The Brain of Cthulhu can also be summoned with Bloody Spine. It can only be summoned in the Crimson. The Brain of Cthulhu has only 1,000 HP but has two forms: In the first form, the brain cannot be harmed and Creepers will float around it. After the creepers are killed the brain will go into its second form, where it will charge at you, it will also teleport while it's chasing you, so you might want to have a ranged weapon. Unlike other bosses, the Brain of Cthulhu is not immune to knockback. The Brain of Cthulhu is the only source of Tissue Samples in the game, and drops a large amount of Crimtane. |
Queen Bee
|
For strategies on how to defeat Queen Bee, see Guide:Queen Bee strategies.
The Queen Bee is summoned by destroying the Queen Bee's offspring encased in honey in the beehive structure, which is located in the underground jungle, or by the use of an Abeemination anywhere in the jungle, and is the only source of Bee Wax. Queen Bee is immune to knockback. |
Skeletron
|
For strategies on how to defeat Skeletron, see Guide:Skeletron strategies.
Skeletron is summoned by speaking to the Old Man and activating his curse at the entrance of the Dungeon at night. It can be summoned again by killing the Clothier with the Clothier Voodoo Doll equipped at night (Clothier arrives after defeating Skeletron, and it is assumed he is the Old man). Defeating Skeletron allows you to freely access the Dungeon without being attacked by the Dungeon Guardian. The Dungeon contains many unique items, as well as hazards. It is not recommended to enter without strong armor. |
Wall of Flesh
|
For strategies on how to defeat the Wall of Flesh, see Guide:Wall of Flesh strategies.
The Wall of Flesh is summoned by throwing the Guide Voodoo Doll into a pool of lava in the Underworld while the Guide is alive. It is known by most players as the hardest pre-Hardmode boss, at 8,000 health, and defeating it will irreversibly enable Hardmode in that given world. Its defeat will also allow the creation of the summoning items for various Hardmode bosses. It can drop several powerful items, one of them being the guaranteed drop Pwnhammer which can be used to break Demon Altars in order to spawn Hardmode Ores. |
NPCs
An NPC (Non-Player Character) is a friendly automated character that provides some service to players. Players can utilize NPCs by standing near them and right-clicking on them. Most NPCs are vendors, selling items to players in exchange for coins, and can be sold items by a player in order to obtain coins, though some NPCs perform other functions.
Town NPCs
This is a list of generic town NPCs. They arrive when certain requirements have been met and can be moved into specific housing. They will appear in the list of NPCs in the housing section of the inventory.
The Guide spawns with the player when they start a new world. He provides tips and crafting recipes. He despawns (dies, actually) when the Wall Of Flesh is summoned, but eventually respawns.
File:DyeTradernpc.png | The Dye Trader sells the Dye Vat crafting station, which allows you to craft and mix Dyes. The Dye Trader is acquired when you have any item used to make a Dye, or Dye itself. |
The Angler is acquired by talking to him in the Ocean Biome, he will usually be found either sleeping on the Sand or floating on the Ocean surface. He does not sell anything, but will give Quests when talked to.
File:Merchantnpc.png | The Merchant is acquired when all players combined have more than 50 in their inventories. He sells certain basic tools. |
File:Demolitionistnpc.png | The Demolitionist is acquired when you have an explosive in your Inventory. He sells explosives, and, in hardmode, Hellfire Arrows and Explosive Powder. |
File:Painternpc.png | The Painter sells paints and equipment used to paint blocks and walls different colors. Acquired after having three other Town NPCs. |
File:Nursenpc.png | The Nurse is acquired when you have found and used a Crystal Heart to increase your life capacity above the initial 100. She can fully heal players in exchange for coins. |
File:Dryadnpc.png | The Dryad is acquired when you have beaten a Boss other than King Slime and Wall of Flesh. She buys and sells certain nature/corruption items, and can tell the player the percentage of Corruption and Hallow in the world. |
File:Armsdealernpc.png | The Arms Dealer is acquired when you have bullets, or a gun that shoots bullets, in your inventory. He sells certain guns, bullets, and after the Eater of Worlds or the Brain of Cthulhu has been defeated, Unholy Arrows. |
The Party Girl sells items that create colorful visual effects, such as the Bubble Machine, Confetti Gun, and fireworks. After acquiring 8 other Town NPCs, the Party Girl has a 2% chance of spawning at each dawn, after which she remains. If killed, she starts over with a 2% chance of spawning each dawn.
The Goblin Tinkerer is found bound somewhere underground after defeating a Goblin Invasion. He sells items such as the Tinkerer's Workshop, and can reforge tools and equipment.
The Witch Doctor sells the Blowgun, the Imbuing Station and various Fountains. The Witch Doctor is acquired after you defeat Queen Bee.
The Stylist can change your hair style, and sell a variety of hair products. You can find the Stylist in Spider Nests. File:Pc only.png
The Clothier is acquired after you defeat Skeletron. He sells certain Vanity items, including the Familiar clothes. Note: Once the Clothier arrives, the Old Man despawns permanently (they are the same person).
The Mechanic is found bound in the Dungeon. She sells wire and other mechanical items. |
Other NPCs
The following NPCs are not considered town NPCs because they cannot be moved into specific housing. Details below.
The Traveling Merchant randomly spawns and will stay for one day. He sells a random selection of unique items. File:Pc only.png
File:Oldmannpc.png | The Old Man is found at the entrance to the Dungeon. He summons Skeletron, but only at night. Once Skeletron is defeated, the Old Man is no longer present, as (it can be inferred) the curse he was afflicted with is removed and he becomes the Clothier. |
