Paintings are decorative furniture items that can be placed on background walls. Each is a framed image that depicts a particular scene, usually Terraria-related. Their tooltips generally contain a person's name, apparently intended to credit each painting's artist; some names may be fictional, though some correspond to known Terraria sprite designers (see Trivia below).
There are currently 108 paintings, 21 of which are sold by the Painter under certain conditions, 3 by the Princess, 4 by the Golfer after a golf score of 2000 under certain Moon phases, and 9 are randomly sold by the Traveling Merchant. 15 other paintings are found placed naturally in Underground Cabins, 14 in the Underground Desert , 24 in the Dungeon, 12 in The Underworld, 5 randomly acquired from Goodie Bags, and 1 awarded randomly by the Angler for completing a fishing quest.

Notes
- The Catacomb is visually similar to Paintings and operates similarly, but is not considered a painting in the game's code. This is most likely because it has a different look, both picture and the frame, each time it is placed.
- When a painting is generated in a dungeon, the game can place 2 sizes of paintings: a 3×3 painting (2/3 chance), and a 6×4 painting (1/3 chance).
- A random number between 1 and 7 (inclusive) is chosen for the 3×3 paintings. For 6×4 paintings, a random number between 1 and 17 (inclusive) is chosen. Note that The Guardian's Gaze is rarer than the other paintings because it must be chosen in two 1 in 7 rolls to appear. The chances for every painting are listed below.
- Template:Item/optionsTemplate:Item/options

- Other decorative wall hangings include Hanging Skeleton and Wall Skeleton (both looted from the Dungeon), Trophies (dropped by Bosses), Holly (looted from Christmas Presents), Racks (crafted at the Sawmill), Animal Skins (sold by the Traveling Merchant), Compass Rose, Life Preserver, Ship's Wheel, Treasure Map and Wall Anchor (Angler quest rewards).
- Although Banners have the appearance of being wall hangings, they are not hung on the wall, but rather from blocks.
- Although the paintings "First Encounter", "Good Morning", "Through the Window" and "Underground Reward" appear to be square, their ingame size is 3 blocks wide by 2 blocks high.
- Waldo is much rarer than the other paintings that can be found in Underground Cabins. For any given painting in an Underground Cabin, there is a 32.5% chance for it to be a 2x3 painting, and out of all the 2x3 paintings, there is only a 0.49% chance for it to be Waldo. Combining these two percentages, there is only about a 0.16% chance for a painting to be Waldo.

- The desert paintings are named after the testers that created the art for those paintings.
- The frames on the paintings generally correspond to a wood or block.
- "Princess 64" is likely a reference to Super Mario 64, where a princess is featured.
- This can be further confirmed due to one of the Princess NPC's possible names, Momo, which is the Japanese word for Peach and a reference to the most common princess and female protagonist in the Mario franchise, Princess Peach. She is also featured in Super Mario 64.
- The painting "Dark Side of the Hallow" is the last item added to Terraria going by Item IDs.
