(→‎Settings: ...when killed, since they're bones and there's no gore.)

Line 1: Line 1:
  +
Settings are a set of gameplay options available from the game's main menu, by clicking on the "Settings" button.
An NPC (Non-Player Character) is a friendly automated character that provides some service to players. Players can utilize NPCs by standing near them and right-clicking on them. Most NPCs are vendors, selling items to players in exchange for coins, and can be sold items by a player in order to obtain coins, though some NPCs perform other functions.

  +
Settings
Most NPCs are "Town" NPCs, appearing after certain milestones are achieved in game advancement (details below). They move into structures the player builds, known as Houses, which are generally required for Town NPCs to remain available.

  +
General
  +
*These settings control various gameplay features. When Settings are opened while playing, General will also feature the Volume options.
Town NPCs that have moved into Houses reduce enemy spawn rates in the area, an effect that increases the more of them are present. With four or more Town NPCs in close proximity, enemies generally stop spawning on or near the visible screen altogether. Players tend to utilize this effect by building large structures ("Towns" or "Bases") with several integrated Houses, to serve as their safe haven. Enemy spawn rates in the area return to normal, or are elevated, during Events such as a Blood Moon or Goblin Invasion.

  +
{|class="terraria" width="100%"

  +
! width="200" |Setting
Town NPCs generally walk around during the day, and remain still in their assigned Houses at night. They have finite health and can take damage from enemies or Lava, and can die, though they will respawn following a delay as long as a suitable vacant House is still available. NPCs cannot be attacked by players, and their health regenerates over time.

  +
!Description

There are currently 21 Town NPCs. An additional 2 NPCs can be encountered that don't move into Houses.

Housing
Town NPCs require a suitable, vacant House built by a player. A House is a confined room enclosed by a frame of blocks, with a Door, background Walls, and two furniture items. Certain types of furniture are required, as well as certain room dimensions (see House for details). Houses must not be located near Corruption or Crimson, and if those spread too close to an occupied House, the NPC living there may move out.

Town NPCs' home assignments can be re-arranged using NPC Flags from the Housing Menu, where you can also check whether a room is a suitable House.

The Guide and Old Man are unique in that they always spawn upon creating a world. The Guide will also move into the first House you build. If he dies, he will need a proper House to respawn. The Old Man does not move into a House, but always appears near the Dungeon's entrance, and respawns the following day if killed.

If a House occupied by an NPC is damaged in a way that makes it invalid, the NPC will move out and walk around the area until a suitable House is restored. If killed, the NPC will respawn again whenever a new House becomes available.

Buying and Selling
Items can be bought simply by right-clicking an NPC and taking items from their inventory while their cost in coins is available in the player's inventory. Holding the right mouse button will allow the player to buy an item in bulk, so long as the item is stackable. The buy speed increases the longer the right-click button is held. Certain NPC's will sell Biome Specific Items if their House is located within a specific biome.

All NPC vendors can also be used to sell your unwanted or surplus items to gain coins, simply by placing your unwanted item(s) in their inventory. Items are always sold to vendors at one-fifth their purchase price. Not all items have a sell value (very common items such as Dirt or Wood have no value). Hovering over your item while the NPC's inventory is open will show its sell value. Should you change your mind about a sale, sold items can be taken back in exchange for the amount you sold them for, as long you haven't yet closed the NPC's inventory screen. This does not hold true for returning bought items, which must be sold back at their standard sell rate of one-fifth the purchase price.

All NPC vendors buy and sell at the same price.

Turning Autosave on (default) has the benefit of keeping your progress saved in case of a crash or power outage, without having to worry about saving manually. Some players prefer to leave this option off, in case a potentially world-altering glitch occurs, or if they would like to experiment in a world without altering it, and be able to go back to its previous state later.

*Config.json settings desktop icon
* NPCs will take about 2 minutes to spawn after another NPC has spawned or dawn passes.

  +
*Camera mode desktop icon
* Bound NPCs found underground can be freed by talking to them, after which they will always respawn whenever a vacant house is available. Having an empty room ready for them when you anticipate finding one will mean you will have convenient access to them from your Town earlier on, though this is not required, and building a house later will still cause them to spawn at that time.

  +
*Expert mode desktop icon
* NPCs will not spawn during an active Event or at night.

* Male NPCs will teleport to a King Statue when you activate it, and similarly female NPCs will teleport to a Queen Statue when you activate it.

  +
* All NPCs have an Attack stat of 10, though they don't attack anything.

  +
Notes
* NPCs will teleport home during the night if the player(s) are away from both their home and the NPC itself. This can be useful for relocating them across the map without needing to escort them or to get them across terrain that would otherwise kill them (such as a lava moat).

  +
*Before 1.2.3, going to your inventory with autopause on while using a weapon or tool and clicking an item would get it stuck and make it drop when you exit your inventory (unless you right-clicked outside of your inventory to drop the item yourself). If this was tried with a consumable item, it would be used as such. Healing items acted uniquely to this bug; they would still heal you, but would not inflict Potion Sickness. Update 1.2 had somewhat tried to fix it, but could still be circumvented by using a tool or weapon with continuous use. This had been fixed altogether in 1.2.3.

Settings are a set of gameplay options available from the game's main menu, by clicking on the "Settings" button.

Settings

General

 • These settings control various gameplay features. When Settings are opened while playing, General will also feature the Volume options.
Setting Description
Autosave On
- or -
Autosave Off
 • On: Saves your world and character data periodically in the background during gameplay.
 • Off: Only saves when you click "save and quit" in the Inventory (Esc) screen.
Note that the game will always autosave your character upon death regardless of this setting.

Autopause On
- or -
Autopause Off

For singleplayer only, this setting pauses the game whenever you open your inventory or talk to an NPC. This can be useful, as you can work with your inventory without worrying about being attacked or drowning. However, with autopause on, you can't place items from directly out of inventory (the item must be in the hotbar and selected), nor can you use usable items directly out of inventory.

Pickup Text On
- or -
Pickup Text Off

Determines whether or not to show pop-up text describing the items you pick up. This can be useful so that you don't need to constantly check your inventory to see what was picked up, although the text annoys some players as it covers up parts of the graphics above your character during gameplay.

Map Enabled
- or -
Map Disabled

The Minimap can be enabled or disabled. If you cannot open your minimap and this setting is not there, it may be turned off in your CONFIG.JSON file. Inside that file, you will find "mapenabled", make sure it is set to true . If it is already set to "true", then your PC may simply not be able to handle this feature, due to its memory requirements.

Smart Cursor Mode Toggle
- or -
Smart Cursor Mode Hold

Changes the way that the Smart Cursor is activated.

 • Toggle: Smart Cursor is activated when the mapped key (Left Ctrl by default) is pressed once, and deactivated by pressing again.
 • Hold: Smart Cursor is only active when the mapped key is held down.
Event Progress Bar On
- or -
Event Progress Bar Off
- or -
Event Progress Bar Timed
 • On: Shows a progress bar displaying percent of an event completed.
 • Off: Hides the progress bar.
 • Timed: Shows the progress bar, but hides itself if no enemies have been defeated in the past few seconds. Reappears when another enemy is defeated.
Placement Preview On
- or -
Placement Preview Off

Determines whether or not to preview placement of furniture. This can help pinpoint exactly where furniture is placed as opposed to having to break and replace it if improperly placed.

Blood and Gore On
- or -
Blood and Gore Off

Toggles blood and gore effects. When disabled, entities "bleed" puffs of smoke. This includes things that spurt blood as part of their animation, such as Demon Eyes and Skeletron. Skeletal entities will still burst into body parts when killed. Players may turn Blood and Gore off so the screen isn't littered with enemy pieces. It may also be suitable to disable this setting when involving a younger audience.

Highlight New Items On
- or -
Highlight New Items Off

Determines whether newly picked up items are highlighted in the inventory. This aids in quickly locating acquired items and disappears when a highlighted item is moused over or the inventory is closed.

Video

Setting Description
Go Fullscreen
- or -
Go Windowed
Toggles between full-screen and windowed modes. Playing in windowed mode may slow performances the game will be rendered only by the CPU.
Resolution Sets the resolution used for full-screen mode. Has no effect in windowed mode, where resolution is set to the window's size. Higher resolution makes the game look smoother but can slow performance. Note that although resolution can affect the "zoom" from your character (that is, increase the game screen boundaries), it can only do so within the limit of your computer's maximum screen resolution.[1] That is, screens with high max resolution can produce a much greater zoom than screens with lower max resolution, even if it may require third-party software to make Terraria accept abnormally high resolution values (example: RomTerraria, image).
Parallax Changes how much the background biome images scrolls in relation to the player's movements. Higher numbers make the background move more, producing a more apparent 3D depth effect. Lower numbers make the background more stationary.
Frame Skip On
- or -
Frame Skip Off
 • On (Recommended): Skips unnecessary frames, which may increase performance on some computers.
 • Off: Renders all frames, which may make the game look smoother, but will also reduce performance on some computers. The "off" setting is currently glitchy, and is not recommended.
Lighting Changes the lighting mode.
Multicore Lighting (Added in 1.2.3) Sets the number of threads used to render lighting effects. Set this to the number of cores your CPU has for optimal performance (or twice the number of cores for Intel CPUs with hyper-threading available. You can search http://ark.intel.com to see if your CPU has hyper-threading available). Setting this to a higher number than the number of available CPU cores could negatively impact performance.
Quality Switches between low, medium, high, or auto lighting quality. Higher qualities will look better but may slow performance on some computers. Auto continually adapts the quality setting based on your computer's performance (FPS, or "framerate") during gameplay. (The Lighting setting above merely defines the type of lighting, this Quality setting determines actual rendering quality.)
Background On
- or -
Background Off
Switches the biome background images on or off (eg. background trees). Switching these off can improve performance on slower computers.
