A Gem staff is a magic weapon that fires a brightly glowing projectile traveling at medium speed. There are currently 7 types corresponding to the 7 different gems. Higher-tier gem staves are capable of piercing one enemy. All gem staves, except the Amber Staff, are crafted from gems and bars at the Iron or Lead Anvil.

    Notes

    • Not all ores can be obtained through mining in one single world. Only 4 of the 7 types of gem staves will be easily craftable in any given world (withholding some special seeds); alternative metals can be had from a crate, bonus drops from a slime, Extractinator or from dropping the opposite ore on shimmer, but even all of these together represent quite low amounts of any given metal.
    • In pre-Hardmode, the Amber Staff can only be obtained through materials produced with an Extractinator, killing Tomb Crawlers, or opening Oasis Crates; these are the only ways to get Sturdy Fossils before Hardmode. Prior to 1.4, the Extractinator was also the only way to get Amber.
    • Like most other projectiles, the speed of a gem staff's projectile is affected by liquids.

    Tips

    • Gem staves can be divided into tiers based on their strength and behavior:
      • 1st tier lacks both autofire and piercing: AmethystAmethyst, TopazTopaz, SapphireSapphire
      • 2nd tier has autofire and piercing: EmeraldEmerald
      • 3rd tier has high damage and fast speed: AmberAmber, RubyRuby, DiamondDiamond
    • Their bright glow, reasonable mana cost, and auto-fire from the higher tiers make gem staves handy cave exploration tools.
    • A gem staff can be considered the magical equivalent of the Musket, being the first weapon of their class a player will often obtain and quite strong for when they can be obtained. Note that in the PC version PC version, Console version Console version, Mobile version Mobile version, Old Chinese version Old Chinese version, tModLoader version tModLoader version, and tModLoader 1 tModLoader 1.3-Legacy version, the Wand of Sparking can be obtained prior to a gem staff.

    History

    • Desktop 1.2.3:
      • Increased mana usage of gem staves.
      • Slightly lowered damage of higher tier gem staves.
