Santa-NK1 is a Hardmode mini-boss that spawns during the Frost Moon event. When below half health, the face and beard of the Santa mask will be torn apart to reveal a rather morbid mechanical skull underneath.
Attack Phases
Santa-NK1 repeatedly cycles through three attack phases:
- First phase: Chain gun fires bullets at the player.
- Second phase: Presents launch high, then rain down via parachute from above, causing damage on contact with players. These travel through blocks.
- Third phase: Rocket barrage. These also travel through blocks.
While moving, it also drops large spiked balls on the ground that deal high damage (120-150+ with Chlorophyte armor). These increase in frequency as Santa-NK1 takes damage.
Notes
- Santa-NK1 currently has one of the highest damage rates in the game.
- The drop chances of the items increase somewhat linearly from wave 7 to 20:
- The chance the Santa-NK1 will drop items is determined by the formula
1 / floor((30 - wave) / 2.5)
, which at the minimum and maximum waves the Santa-NK1 appears, evaluates to 1/9 - 1/4 (11.11% - 25%) as the wave increases. If the Santa-NK1 does end up dropping an item, there will be a 50% chance that either the Chain Gun or Elf Melter will drop, which makes the drop chance for each item effectively 1/18 - 1/8 (5.55% - 12.5%). - In Expert mode, the formula for dropping an item becomes
1 / (floor((30 - wave + 7) / 2.5) - 2)
which changes the chances to 1/4 - 1/1 (25% - 100%), making the chances for each individual item 1/8 - 1/2 (12.5% - 50%). - Santa-NK1's trophy will only drop if the 11.11% - 25% / 25% - 100% succeeds and a few more checks pass. If the wave is greater than 15 (8 in expert mode), then the drop chance adds on another chance based on the table below:
- The chance the Santa-NK1 will drop items is determined by the formula
- Additionally, there is a 33% chance in Expert mode that the chance of the trophy drop will increase (1/4 -> 1/3, 1/3 -> 1/2, 1/2 -> 1/1). Factoring all these chances together at minimum and maximum waves results in the chance of the trophy dropping being 4.17% - 12.5% / 6.25%-100%.
Tips
- Note that his Present launch and rocket barrage attacks are highly inaccurate.
- If you use wings you can fly over him back and forth and make it harder for him to hit you with the chain gun and the rocket barrage.
- If you have obtained the Razorpine and Golden Shower then you can hit him with the Golden Shower to lower his defense then fire your Razorpine at him. This is highly effective with Spectre armor with the Spectre Hood as it fully heals you no matter how low you are. This seems to be even more effective on the Nintendo version because the Spectre Hood still has its old stats, which increases magic damage, instead of lowering it.
Trivia
- "Santa-NK1" is a play on the portmanteau of Santa and Tank, "Santank," the name used when the enemy was first announced.
- The image in the game files used for when the face is ripped off uses the name "SantaTank.png."
- Its arm appears to be a large Chain Gun, an item which it sometimes drops.
- The face and mask may be a reference to the 'Terminator' film series, as the Terminator has a metal frame and an outside 'skin'.
- It is one of the only two bosses whose map icon does not change after entering its second phase, the other being the Brain of Cthulhu.
