Template:NPC

The Dye Trader is an NPC. He will move in when the following criteria have been met:

  • An easy-mode boss has been defeated (since update 1.3).
  • There is an empty house.
  • Any material used to make dye is in the player's inventory, such as the Yellow Marigold.

The easiest way to acquire the Dye Trader is to mine for a Yellow Marigold with your pickaxe in a forest biome, or mine a Green Mushroom or Teal Mushroom in the Underground or Cavern layer. Once one of these items is in your inventory, and you have built an empty house, the Dye Trader should spawn.

What is the rarest dye that the Dye Trader sells? toggle section
The Dye Trader in Terraria offers a variety of unique dyes, but the rarest ones are only available under specific conditions. Strange Plants

As of 1.3.0.1 talking to the Dye Trader will show the "Strange Plants" Quest. For the Dye Trader to give the character exclusive dyes, rare plants must be brought to the Dye Trader. These dyes can not be bought from his "Shop" option.

When clicking on the "Strange Plants" button without the right rare plants to give, the trader will say one of the following things:

  • "These dye bottles? Sorry dear friend, these don't take coin. I only take the most precious and rare of flora in exchange for one of these!"
  • "Oh no no, this will not do. For these money is no good, you must return to me with a rare specimen of a plant!"
  • "You think you can pull a fast one on [Dye Trader's name], I don't think so! I only take the rarest of flowers for these special bottles"

Quotes

  • "I bring you the richest colors in exchange for your riches!"
  • "My dear, what you're wearing is much too drab. You absolutely must take a lesson in dyeing your tired attire!"
  • "The only kind of wood I would bother dyeing is RICH Mahogany. Dyeing any other wood is such a waste."
  • "You must do something about [Name of Pirate NPC]. Everytime he comes over here, it takes me a week to get the smell off!" (Only if Pirate NPC is present)

Trivia

  • Ahirom, Abdosir, Hiram, Batnoam and Hanno (correctly spelled Hannu) are references to the ancient Phoenician kings and queens of the same names. Phoenicia was an east Mediterranean empire that became wealthy from the purple dye extracted from coastal snails, and snails indeed drop the ingredient for purple dye.
  • One of the quotes says he sells "the richest colors", however, he only sells 2 dyes, one of them only on multiplayer.
  • Sprited by former artist William Data AKA Waffles.
  • Out of all the vendor NPCs in Terraria, the Dye Trader sells the least number of items, only 6.
  • The Dye Trader's comments about rich mahogany have been confirmed by Cenx to be a reference to the film Anchorman.
