Falling Damage Negation[]

Originally posted by User:Hellfirejag in the main article.

[SW'AG-labs]The circumstances of the above comment have been confirmed exactly 4 times. For each test, the Controll was a lethal fall at a static distance, the independent variable being the Lethality, and the dependant variable being the shadow orb. each test occured with the exact same area. The distance of the fall remains constant. The author requests that contributers attempt to perform additional tests needed to discover the exact distance in which the shadow orb projects this anomaly.

That's pretty cool. Is your estimate of the distance such that the bottoms of most chasms containing Shadow Orbs are safe? I definitely want to confirm this tonight. --Theothersteve7 14:50, 2 June 2011 (UTC)

ummm... i dont think this has anything to do with the shadow orb. I once experienced the same effect in a Hellevator. I forgot to put water or cobweb on the bottom, but i somehow survived the (definitely) lethal drop. I wasnt able to reproduce this controled but it happened several times. Probably it has got to do with a special point to face (up?) or it happens only if the drop has ONE exact height(I prefer this one)? I dunno. I think this is a bug. 217.229.239.27 19:48, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

Clarification[]

The Eye of Cthulu appearing from shadow orbs is pure speculation. Fact is that they appear randomly unless summened with an item. Meteorites do not only spawn from the FIRST orb. Goblin armies only require at least one orb to be broken, but breaking one isnt the trigger for summoning an army. --Blue Legion 12:20, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

For meteorites and goblins, I used the phrase "fulfills criteria for..." and linked the respective pages. Think that does it justice. --Ahamilton9 16:58, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
Question: Does anyone know if breaking 3 orbs and resetting the counter nullifies the chance for a goblin invasion? --DoubleFloat 09:53, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
The "counter" has no impact on goblin invasions. There's two variables, the "counter" which is used for EoW, and then there's a flag that turns on the first time an orb is smashed. Invasions just check the flag, and once that gets set it is never turned off. --GauHelldragon 12:16, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Meteorite Crash[]

I just got the message in my game that a meteorite has landed but I have never broken a single Shadow Orb. This is my very first playthrough of the game.

I've heard there was a bug that cause Shadow Orbs to shatter at world creation, thus allowing meteors to spawn, even though you haven't smashed an orb yet. happypal (talk • contribs) 10:36, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
Had the same thing happen, putting it at the bottom as a bug. --Ahamilton9 16:37, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
I had the same thing happen, and I was very dissapointed when I didn't get a musket from smashing a Shadow Orb. :( 97.116.156.233 14:34, 27 June 2011 (UTC)

Major Changes[]

Made some major changes to the page, pulling the bug into a bug block and separating the message cycle and loot tables to be easier to find. Let me know if I did something horribly wrong, I'm new at this. --Ahamilton9 16:56, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

Order of getting items[]

When I smashed the shadow orbs, I got the listed items in the exact order that they were shown. Is this just extremely uncommon or is it supposed to happen? --Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.131.106.76 (talkcontribs)

It's not impossible, but after the first drop (which is a Musket, no matter what), the drops are completely random. --Lunboks 15:06, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

Videos[]

The first video is 1.0.5 and the potion spamming trick used isn't possible anymore. As such, a 1.0.6 video would be useful. --Havvy 09:56, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

Orbs and meteorites[]

When smashing multiple orbs (during a single day before midnight). Will there be multiple meteorite rolls, or will there be a meteorite roll for the following nights or will any orb after the first one be without meteorite consequences?

When smashing an orb and when there is no meteorite during the next night, will there be a chance for a meteorite during the following nights?

Corruption and Jungle[]

I have the corruption biome near the jungle(jungle below, to the left, to the right) and i can find NO shadow orbs! Yes i looked everywhere.

Meteorite landing overriding EoW summon[]

I suspect that the meteorite landing can prevent the EoW from summoning like usual. I smashed 6 shadow orbs, and on the 3rd orb a meteorite landed INSTEAD of EoW spawning like he is supposed to. The same thing happened when I broke the 6th orb.

I found two orbs three blocks from eachother.[]

Should I upload the image? --71.136.52.95 19:17, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

I have found this in many spots of each instance of corruption generated in any many worlds. In fact, from my very first game world I had this happen and thought it was in fact uncommon to have them spawn far apart from each other! I do not believe that this is a rare placement at all, this should be reviewed further and others find the same, the text should be removed as misleading IMO. If anyone wants I can go back and take pictures, but they will only be of the orb's grottoes as I have destroyed them all. You can see the dynamite and bomb tunneling down and/or across to where they used to be at least.

It is not rare because it happens to my commonly, but thats good luck for you since you knock down 2 orbs at once. -TerrariaMan13240

I found shadow orbs like that too but they weren't even 1 tile away from each other and there were three.

Separate Shadow Orb into two articles[]

Make a Shadow Orb (item) and a Shadow Orb (object) articles rather than merge them, for consistency's sake.

--NoxiousRaven (talk) 17:41, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

Never mind, the article existed already and I fixed the article accordingly.

World generation glitch is still active[]

I thought I should bring it up on this discussion page. I play Terraria v1.2.2, and when I finally generated a world that had corruption, a meteorite had landed during the first night. So the one update on 1.0.6.1 may not have corrected the shadow orb generation problem fully. 184.56.90.168 18:22, 15 February 2014 (UTC)

Goblin army chance[]

Is it 1/15 or 1/30 (after the first one)? This page says 1/15, but the Goblin Army page says 1/30.--Macks2008 (talk) 21:58, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

I looked over the source code and made some corrections. It looks as though both pages were inaccurate. This may be due to changes in recent updates. Equazcion (talk) 22:22, 13 Jan 2015 (UTC)
Correction -- looks like the Goblin Army page had it correct already. Equazcion (talk) 22:26, 13 Jan 2015 (UTC)

Spawning boss early?[]

Was playing multiplayer with friends, and we ran into an issue where after smashing only two Shadow Orbs, the Eater of Worlds spawned (skipping 'screams echo around you' entirely). It only happened once, and further spawns worked as normal after 3 orbs. We also had this happen once with Crimson Hearts as well. Any idea what might be going on here? Gadoink4 (talk) 21:58, 20 April 2020 (UTC)

This is covered in the progression guides and a couple of other places, but just for the record: Occasionally a shadow orb gets broken at startup, by faulty worldgen -- it probably gets its a message on startup, but that would be easy to miss. You can get some warning when this has happened by making sure of the message you get when smashing the first orb -- I'm betting the first orb you smashed actually said "screams..." instead of "a chill...". --MentalMouse42 (talk) 00:06, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
