So I recently thought that it might be good to impose a change to the Item-type infoboxes, regarding the fact that different platforms can, will, and do have different crafting recipes (example being the Crystal Storm). The concept I had in mind is best seen on the ForTesting Wiki, and this example is only specific to the Item Infobox at this point in time. Separate amounts are supported per-recipe, as well as any level of differentiation between the four (currently implemented) possible recipe variants.

Thoughts? I'm just thinking it might be an idea to have this there as a fallback, considering how far the different platforms could diverge in future. (Example of divergence over platform could be Minecraft, heh.)

    • Also, if any other admins think this might be worth notifying the wider community about (for their opinion), we could consider highlighting the post in future.

tl;dr: My idea is to keep all different crafting recipes (if they exist) still readily available in the Infobox, rather than removing them from a page based on the platform, or moving them to a much less-obvious location.

    • Symbol support vote Support - Including crafting recipes by platform in the infoboxes makes a lot more sense than the way we've been noting such differences up to this point.

Incidentally, how much of a concern would increasing the vertical space taken up by infoboxes be? I recall reading a discussion about it from a while ago, but I can't remember if it was decided that anything should be done about it.

That same thought came to me as soon as I saw the vertical size increase (and the example is lacking a visual representation of the extra height that amounts would add). I was considering the possibility of adding clickable tabs for the crafting area, organized by platform. (Maybe even using the platform icons as the tab header.) The only example that comes to mind currently is the top of the infobox on the Naruto Uzumaki page on the Naruto Wikia.)

Or there's always the possibility of setting the crafting section to be auto-hidden with a [Show] option.

I actually just went ahead and set the crafting section to be automatically collapsed, though it required turning that section into a nested table. Any idea if that would cause any problems?

    • Can't currently think of any problems with it, aside from the small decrease in horizontal size. That could be a display problem regarding longer material names, but then again that's a problem with the infobox format itself anyway.

I quite like the idea of an auto-collapsed table, it looks nice and saves a lot of space. (We could have the template coded to automatically nest the table if there's more than one recipe as well, I'm sure.)

Changes to articles will have to be done manually, yeah. Shouldn't be as bad as it sounds, though – I don't think there are currently all that many items which have different recipes on different platforms.

    • Symbol support vote Support - - It looks good, and showing as much information as clearly as possible is the goal of an article, right?

I think the clickable tabs for each platform would be the best way to go about it.

Yeah, I don't think it should be too bad, either. Are we currently ready to make the changes? Or are you two still working on perfecting the template?

    • Symbol support vote Support - - It looks neater for one thing. I think there should be separate collapsible boxes for "crafting"(What you need to craft the item) and "used for crafting:"(What you can craft with the item).

That, is almost irrelevant to the topic at hand. Yes, we know the recipes for some items are different across platforms, mostly because the others are ports of the old version of PC. That is why we are discussing about the template about the infobox for use on this wiki. We are not solely talking about Crystal Storm.

I really do like this option about the click to show button. Especially with the still increasing amount of users using platforms. This would not change much visually, except the buttons being added to show the info regarded the chosen platform, so can be chosen to open if wanted. Adding all the info to the infobox together may quickly confuse ppl if they quickly want to look up some extra info on how to craft a specific item. The show button would negate that and only takes one extra click for someone to look at the right info they need to know.

    • In that case, I'll try mock up a couple of examples later today. Will put together identical infoboxes with slightly different layouts to see how everyone feels about them. :)

    • Symbol support vote Support - I can see how this would be done, and it would be quite useful. I'm sick of having to explain that not all recipes are the same, or different.

    • Symbol support vote Support - I also look forward to seeing pages like Wood shorten up with collapse templates like this. I'm sure there are a good number of other pages that have infoboxes that are painfully long and need shortening up even if the crafting recipes are not the issue.

Definitely. We're looking at formatting the infoboxes differently if the collapse template isn't as suitable as another solution, tabs for example.

Wouln't different tabs below eachother make it very easy to get confused if you see for example 3 different types of crafting recipies? Newer players might find it difficult to see or recognise wich items are in their game on the specific type of platform. I've seen this used on another game wiki with race specific recipies(don't know wich one anymore, been a while ago) and spent some big time looking for loot that doesnt excisted for me.

edit: If you mean the kind of tabs used like opening a new tab on the internet brouwser, than i misunderstood. That does sounds great as well! Is that an easy option to implement on the pages? If anyone could make an example template for it that would be great! I'm to bad to such things to find a way to create one my own.

From the looks of it, Path already mentioned that he's working on the template examples. :P

    • Might have missed that ^_^" Really looking forward to what it is going to be. If you mean "ForTesting" link in the original post on top, atm it only contains the collapsable itembox. Wich looks great! I think it might be nice to leave the PC crafting recepies visible all the time (as it currently is) and make the other platform recipies collapsable. But i'm really interested in the tabs thing The Pathogen mentioned!

    • Nope, I wasn't talking about the link at the top.

I was talking about when he said this. xD

Anyways, back on topic. Glad to see that everyone seems into the idea! Can't wait to have a look at the new template. :]

neither. I kinda like the way it looks with only symbols - the names next to them seems a bit unneeded.
