Today, I started an all magic run. What this means is that I will not be able to use any weapons that aren't melee. I won't be counting pickaxes, axes, or hammers, but I will also not be using them as weapons. I am playing as a Mediumcore character, and my world is a large world with the Corruption.
This is going to be a really hard run, I think. That's because you can't get magic weapons anywhere near as soon as you can with melee and ranged weapons. You start the game right away with the Copper Shortsword, a melee weapon, and you can quickly craft a Wooden Sword, a much better melee weapon. Though you don't start the game with a ranged weapon, it's very easy to create a Wooden Bow and Wooden Arrows just by chopping down trees and mining stone blocks.
For magic weapons, though, you have to do some digging - literally. You can get the Wand of Sparking out of a chest, but it's quite rare (I've never gotten a Wand of Sparking in all my time playing Terraria) and not very powerful, either. My first magic weapon will probably be a Topaz Staff, as my world has tin instead of copper. I'll get as much tin as I can on the surface, but finding enough topaz will be a very difficult undertaking, especially given that I will have no weapons as I dig.
My first goal will be to explore as much of the surface as I can before going underground. Since the world is large, I can open and dig up lots of chests. These may contain a Wand of Sparking, but if they don't, they'll probably at least have a Magic Mirror. A Magic Mirror will be vital; it'll allow me to return to spawn without dying, which will let me keep all my items. Plus, once I store my items in chests, I won't lose too many important things when I do die.
On the surface, I will also chop down trees to make myself some wooden armor and dig up as much tin as I can, since tin can spawn on the surface. I won't need tin just for the Topaz Staff, but for armor and tools as well. Finally, being on the surface will allow me to collect lots of Fallen Stars, which will let me maximize my mana.
I didn't do all that much today. The first in-game evening hasn't even arrived yet. I just did standard stuff: chopping down trees and building a house. I also threw away my Copper Shortsword that I spawned with. However, I did come very close to death. I went into the desert and was chased out by an Antilon Charger. These things are very fast and do a lot of damage to an unarmored player, especially one who can't fight back. Fortunately, I figured out that if you jump over an Antilon Charger, it'll turn around to face you and lose all of its momentum. Jumping back over again and running will allow you to run faster than it for a short period of time. Rinse and repeat, and you'll be able to safely outrun an Antilon Charger.
I tried going in the other direction, but I entered the Corruption and was chased away by a Eater of Souls. Fortunately, Eaters of Souls are a lot easier to outrun than Antilon Chargers. Still, traversing the surface will be much more difficult than I thought. If only I had the snow biome next to me instead of the desert or Corruption.
Anyway, here is a picture of my humble abode:
You may have noticed that my player character (whose name is shiroyama, by the way) looks a lot like Robin from Fire Emblem Awakening. This is completely intentional. I've never played Fire Emblem in my life, but I do enjoy playing as Robin in Super Smash Bros.
