Starbound Wiki

Hi Math. I recently started looking around for a Starbound wiki to edit. I ended up at "Hero's Starbound Wiki". Needless to say I am really disappointed where hero is taking this wiki, and in my opinion the Starbound community needs a successful Starbound Wikia. I took this opertunity to found in the hopes to acomplish that. I was wondering if you'd be at all interested in becoming an administrator and helping out when you can? I'm positive If we get a strong foundation started before the beta is released we can become a prominent Starbound Wiki on the net. Let me know your thoughts! Thanks!

Dak47922 Talk 16:18, May 6, 2013 (UTC)

Hey Dak, unfortunately, I'm very busy with work and don't have much time to devote to other projects. It also seems very unlikely that I will play Starbound in the near future.
However, if you could use some general wiki help that's not related to Starbound-specific content — for example, help with template design, site-wide CSS styling, JavaScript features, or just someone to talk to and bounce ideas off of, I'd be happy to be a temporary helper in a non-admin role, as time allows. Just let me know if there's anything I can do for you! 20px_Rin_Tohsaka_Avatar.png Mathmagician ƒ(♫) 03:37 UTC, Tuesday, 7 May 2013
That would be greatly appreciated! I'll get back to you if I need any help! Thanks!

Small Request

Hey math! It looks like the Starbound Wiki is going to be moderately successful. I am having a small issue with my Template:MainpageHeading. I want to set it up just like ours here, of course with a different BG image. For me the custom BG is not taking effect. At first I thought it was a caching problem but its been almost a full day and it still hasn't taken effect. I have the following code on my Common.css:

/* Mainpage heading styling */
.MainpageHeading {
    background:url("") !important;

It's also worth noting that the template works correctly on monobook.

Dak47922 Talk 18:18, May 7, 2013 (UTC)

According to Help:JavaScript and CSS Cheatsheet, the Monobook skin automatically includes MediaWiki:Common.css, but the Oasis skin does not. So, in order to get Common.css to work in Oasis, you have to manually import it.
To do that, simply add the following code to the top of your MediaWiki:Wikia.css page:
 * Importing MediaWiki:Common.css
@import url("/load.php?mode=articles&only=styles&articles=MediaWiki:Common.css");
On a related note, there is a small syntax error in your MediaWiki:Common.css. Particularly, the part that you copy/pasted above, notice that there is a missing closing brace } . Make sure to add that closing brace so that it looks like this:
/* Mainpage heading styling */
.MainpageHeading {
    background:url("") !important;

Reporting a Vandal

This user repeatedly vandalized the Green Dye and Jungle Grass Seeds pages.

Thanks, Oscuritaforze (talk) 17:20, May 8, 2013 (UTC)

Hey, I've blocked them. Thanks for reverting the vandalism and letting me know. 20px_Rin_Tohsaka_Avatar.png Mathmagician ƒ(♫) 03:22 UTC, Thursday, 9 May 2013
No problem, but I just reported 'im. It was Drkpanoz who reverted the vandalism. Oscuritaforze (talk) 03:32, May 9, 2013 (UTC)

"Bad header to a read buffer overflow" ???

i went on terraria and i played and it kicked me off and it said bad header lead to a read buffer overflow or something like that. what does it mean? Lolliepop chainsaw (talk) 13:17, May 12, 2013 (UTC)

User:Old Mang

The user mentioned above has been making several severely disruptive edits across the wiki. He also created a couple of files for this purpose.

Edit: He also created Talk:Ccoobbaallttmann.

Thanks. Oscuritaforze (talk) 03:38, May 13, 2013 (UTC)

The pages have been deleted and the user has been blocked. Thank you, Oscuritaforze. DzylonTalk04:06May 13, 2013

This user has repeatedly vandalized the Excalibur and Night's Edge pages. They also made some edits to the Ocram page, but those seemed to be in good faith.

Also, this user comes back every so often to add pages to categories they very clearly do not belong in.

Thanks. Oscuritaforze (talk) 03:54, May 19, 2013 (UTC)

The first one has been blocked. The second one—about the categories—will keep an eye on them for a few days. May just be an accident or something, not necessarily vandalism. 20px_Rin_Tohsaka_Avatar.png Mathmagician ƒ(♫) 17:33 UTC, Sunday, 19 May 2013

Persistent Vandal

I already reported this on a thread on the Administrator Noticeboard, but I don't know if it was seen, so I'll post it here, too:

This user has been coming back to the wiki periodically over the past few days and making a series of disruptive edits. Edits made since I started that forum thread were on the Flower of Fire, Hamdrax, Queen Statue, and Spectral Arrow pages.

Thanks, Oscuritaforze (talk) 22:48, June 19, 2013 (UTC)

(P.S. For something like this, just letting one admin know is sufficient, right? No need to post a message like this on multiple talk pages?)

Thanks for the heads up, I've replied on the admin noticeboard thread now. And yes, letting one admin know should be sufficient in theory. In practice, if you don't receive a response, feel free to try alternate methods of reporting (a talk page message like this, or contacting another admin you see online, etc), whatever works works :) 20px_Rin_Tohsaka_Avatar.png Mathmagician ƒ(♫) 02:43 UTC, Saturday, 22 June 2013

I was wondering: after I am finished testing something on the For Testing wiki, should I roll the pages I edited back to how I found them? Or should I leave 'em as is?

Thanks. Oscuritaforze (talk) 05:50, July 25, 2013 (UTC)

You can leave them as-is if you like, or you can roll them back if you like. Up to you. The only thing I think anyone would be concerned about is if you did something that ruined the entire site, e.g. some CSS code in the site-wide stylesheet that completely breaks the user interface, etc. 20px_Rin_Tohsaka_Avatar.png Mathmagician ƒ(♫) 02:22 UTC, Friday, 26 July 2013

Statue Article + CSS

Would you be able to create some form of infobox for Statues, please? also, some parts of the chat still need to have rounded corners, this should help:

.Write img {
border: 1px solid #ccc;
border-radius: 7px;
left: 7px;
position: absolute;
.Rail .selected {
box-shadow: inset 0 0 7px 0px #334e92;
-webkit-box-shadow: inset 0 0 7px 0px #334e92;
background: #d4dcf0;
border-radius: 7px;

Thanks. FallenShadow

Hi, for the chat CSS, could you show a screenshot to demonstrate what it is supposed to do? I haven't worked on the chat part of the stylesheet and wasn't aware it had any rounded corners...
For the statues – we do have Template:Infobox:Statue which is used for statues. For example, you can see it in the upper-right corner of the Jellyfish Statue page. 20px_Rin_Tohsaka_Avatar.png Mathmagician ƒ(♫) 02:52 UTC, Tuesday, 6 August 2013
Excuse my poor edit, but those are the bits that need changing. I can re-write it all for you. I'm extremely good at re-skinning chat and the oasis skin. :P FallenShadow
Okay so, I created a chat stylesheet at MediaWiki:Wikia.css/chat.css. Feel free to continue to restyle chat if you like and I can add/remove code from there when you're ready. I added those bits above for starters. 20px_Rin_Tohsaka_Avatar.png Mathmagician ƒ(♫) 03:32 UTC, Wednesday, 7 August 2013

Video Policy

Hey Math,

I was wondering; do you think it would be a good idea to let anyone add videos, but then use Terraria Wiki:Proposed Videos for videos which have been deemed controversial for whatever reason (edit warring, quality concerns, etc.)?

Something like that just happened on the Vampire Knives page, and I directed the users to post their videos there, so I figured it would be a good idea to ask the other admins before making it official (and thus making the Proposed Videos page more visible somehow).

Thanks, Oscuritaforze (talk) 05:20, October 5, 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, that sounds fine. In my opinion, the way video proposing page was set up just hasn't worked well for this wiki in the long run, as most people aren't even aware of that page when they go to post videos for the first time. 20px_Rin_Tohsaka_Avatar.png Mathmagician ƒ(♫) 16:13 UTC, Sunday, 6 October 2013
Alright, I updated the Video Policy with the new information for now (also made a note of it in the community message to the right of Special:WikiActivity). Feel free to change it/open a new discussion on it as you see fit; I thought it would be best to update it now rather than move on without a Video Policy for too much longer during the height of the update hype.

Rollbacker Nominations

Hey again Math,

The users Drkpanoz and Kida155 have been very helpful editors ever since they joined (for instance, Drkpanoz pretty much singlehandedly fully updated the Data IDs page and template, while Kida had a great hand in ensuring that almost none of the 800+ pages that have been added so far have remained uncategorized), and both of them expressed interest in the roll of rollbacker when I asked them about it. (They've also both been highly active in the chat, so I already gave them chatmod rights. I assume that those rights don't actually need discussion to be given out to capable individuals?)

My question, then, is if there is a place where users can be formally nominated for rollbacker rights? If not, would something like this talk page message suffice?

Thanks, Oscuritaforze (talk) 02:08, October 10, 2013 (UTC)

Hi, sorry for very delayed response! So far as I know, we don't have (and haven't ever really had) a formal nomination process for rollback users or chat mods on this wiki. Those are basically at any admin's discretion. If you think they would be good for the role, that's sufficient. Please go ahead and reply here one more time to re-confirm that they should get rollback rights, and I'll go ahead and add them to the group for you. 20px_Rin_Tohsaka_Avatar.png Mathmagician ƒ(♫) 03:53 UTC, Wednesday, 23 October 2013
Good to know! In that case, I would wholeheartedly reaffirm that those two users deserve those rights. :)
In the meantime, I created a page (talked to Path about it here) for such nominations. I guess it can be deleted or formalized later depending on how much it is used?
Thanks, Oscuritaforze (talk) 05:10, October 23, 2013 (UTC)

Abuse Filter

There was one part of the profanity filter which was causing the item name "Flesh Table" to be censored, which was preventing the aforementioned page from being created (see: Now, I was able to apply a temporary fix which allowed the page to be created, but I believe that it will also dampen the effectiveness of the filter slightly. My question is this: is it possible to alter the filter in such a way that the above false positive stops occurring, but the filter still retains the functionality that it had in the first place (ie. whatever the functionality provided by the removed code "\pP" was)?

Thanks (and sorry for spamming your talk page! >.>), Oscuritaforze (talk) 23:39, October 14, 2013 (UTC)

In the abuse filter, "\pP" is part of a regular expression and it means "punctuation characters" — so for example, it would match a period (.), or an exclamation point (!) and so forth. I haven't looked into this issue yet, so I'm not sure why it would prevent the creation or editing of that page, but I trust that the solution you found works well enough.
I doubt that any "loosening" of the filter caused by your change will have significant consequence. If you do start to notice a lot more swear words in edit summaries or recent changes or something, at that point maybe I would be concerned. But if you just tweaked one little part of the filter and everything else seems to be okay, I wouldn't worry about it too much. 20px_Rin_Tohsaka_Avatar.png Mathmagician ƒ(♫) 03:53 UTC, Wednesday, 23 October 2013
Ah, alright then. In that case, the problem was almost certainly the filename "File:Flesh_Table.png". I figured that the \pP did something like that by the fact that it solved the problem, but if that's all it does, this was probably an isolated enough incident that my latest changes can be reverted...
Thanks, Oscuritaforze (talk) 05:10, October 23, 2013 (UTC)

This may sound a bit wierd but do you happen to have "TheSuperMathemagicia" as your youtube name? I remember them posting a comment on a video about my terraria server(now closed btw, not trying to advertise) and when I saw you here I remembered someone with a similar name posting that comment... I dont even know if you have a youtube account, Im just being curious :3 Latias1290 09:42, October 17, 2013 (UTC)

Hi! Nope, that is definitely not my account name on youtube. I'm not sure who that would be. 20px_Rin_Tohsaka_Avatar.png Mathmagician ƒ(♫) 03:53 UTC, Wednesday, 23 October 2013

Terraria 1.2

Haha, I'm probably not the person to ask about the quality of the update, as I kinda had technical difficulties for the first couple of weeks after release. I'm really behind – I haven't even gotten into Hard Mode yet (which is where a lot of the new content is...)!

That said, it probably says a lot regarding the sheer scale of this update that we're three weeks in and I'm still surprised that most of the new stuff has been added to the wiki "already". (Seriously, look at the patch notes – this was more an expansion pack than anything.)

Hopefully you'll have the opportunity to play it soon! (And when you do, have fun!)

Chat Join/Leave Messages

Hey Math,

I was just wondering if it would be possible to make it so that certain users/user groups would give different messages when joining/leaving chat? I've looked through Special:AllPages, sorting by the MediaWiki namespace, but I couldn't seem to find anything that corresponds to the messages in place besides these two pages, which seem to control the messages for everyone...

Thanks, Oscuritaforze (talk) 00:57, November 3, 2013 (UTC)

I do not believe it is possible to do this through ordinary methods in Wikia's software (i.e. the MediaWiki: messages like you mentioned). It is very likely possible to create a customized piece of JavaScript to provide that functionality – different chat-welcome messages to specific users or user groups.
To create something like that would require someone with 1) coding knowledge, 2) free time/determination, and/or 3) good knowledge of Wikia's chat feature. You may be able to find such a person if you make a post in the Community Central forums. I know how to script something like that, but I personally don't know very much about Wikia's chat feature – so, deploying such a script might be a slight hurdle – so, I would defer to more knowledgeable techies :) 20px_Rin_Tohsaka_Avatar.png Mathmagician ƒ(♫) 04:31 UTC, Friday, 8 November 2013

New Abuse Filter

Hey Math.

I just created a new filter to prevent users from blanking the main page. However, considering how I gave it more severe consequences than the other filters (it will revoke the autoconfirmed status of a non-admin user who triggers it in addition to warning them and disallowing the edit), I figured that it would be a good idea to ask if you see anything blatantly wrong with it before I enable it.

Thanks. Oscuritaforze (talk) 01:36, January 8, 2014 (UTC)

Disabling Achievements/Spam Blogs/other stuff

Hello Math. Long time, no see. How's it going?

Anyway, a few things:

Considering how we've had a large number of users creating low-content/spam blogs or otherwise farming for achievements over the past few months, I talked with a few users a little while ago (including Squazzil and TerrariamcSwaggins, among others) about potentially disabling achievements on this wiki. Would you have any particular objections if this were to happen? As I've expressed in the past, I feel like disabling achievements at this point would have minimal impact on a wiki of this size, so I'd like to think that the good in such a decision would outweigh the bad.

Additionally, do you think it would be a good idea to make a way for users on this site to propose new wiki policies? It has become more and more clear over time that there are some things (such as categories, the aforementioned blog posts, etc.) which desperately need to be regulated (or at least better explained), but there isn't really a way of doing that at the moment (there have been a couple of attempts at policy changes in the forums over the past few months, but they didn't really yield any results). What I had in mind for this purpose was creating a template like this one to be placed on the proposed policy page, then discussion about the policy would take place at Terraria Wiki talk:Policy. If need be, we could update MediaWiki:Community-corner, MediaWiki:Communitymessages-notice-msg, and MediaWiki:Wiki-navigation to make new policy proposals more visible.

Let me know what you think!

Oscuritaforze (talk) 01:42, February 20, 2014 (UTC)

As a follow-up to this message:
Pretty much everyone I talked to about it agreed, so achievements have been disabled*.
More importantly, the Proposed Policy template has been implemented (and mentioned in the MediaWiki pages I linked above, explained in Terraria Wiki:Policy, etc...)! I ended up creating a proposal for changes to the Image Policy in order to test it out, which can be found here. Feel free to comment on it if you have time. :)
*(Interesting aside about achievements: apparently, if we ever want to re-enable them, they would not actually be fully reset – instead, they would be in the state they were in when they were last disabled. Something to keep in mind if the proposed policy...policy works as planned.)
Oscuritaforze (talk) 22:22, March 7, 2014 (UTC)
Yep. That's actually by design. Even achievements that require you to edit daily will pick up right where they left off. At the moment, there is no way to wipe the slate clean. Rappy @fandom 22:36, March 7, 2014 (UTC)
Interesting. So, does that mean that the daily editing achievement will continue counting even while achievements are disabled, or just that users would still have however many days were on the counter when achievements were disabled upon re-enabling them?
Oscuritaforze (talk) 22:59, March 7, 2014 (UTC)
Turning off achievements just suspends the database. Nothing is added to it. So, if the feature is turned off when I am at 180 days editing, I will be at 180 when it's turned back on. Rappy @fandom 01:16, March 8, 2014 (UTC)

You may or may not have noticed, but there is currently (finally!) a discussion going on regarding implementing a manual of style on this wiki.
