RTE glitches

Hey Path, if you see any more edits like this one where the RTE glitches out big time, could you maybe start a diff list for them? I think I've seen this once or twice before -- wish I could remember where -- might be nice to start up a list of these so we can send them to Special:Contact/bug. Not a big deal though, just if you feel like it. — Mathmagician talk blog 02:15, May 2, 2012 (UTC)

Definitely sounds like a plan there. :) Thanks for reminding me about that Math, I knew something must have been up when I saw that amount of code in the page. Last time I saw it (And looked into it) I think I heard it was because of an old version of IE misreading Wikia's new editor.

Congratulations, you nomination has been successfully closed. Brandon Rhea has granted you admin rights per the results of the nomination. (The temporary provision requiring staff approval for nominations has been removed.) Dzylon is updating all of the necessary stuff, so if it doesn't say "Administrator" on your profile or something -- don't worry, it will soon.

I don't really have much else to say, as I'm sure that you're comfortable with most of the basic admin tools. If you have any questions though, feel free to ask, as always. Otherwise I'll assume that you pretty much have the hang of everything ^^ — Mathmagician talk blog 00:18, May 3, 2012 (UTC)

Yes, everything's been updated (though some of it may require a hard refresh). Congratulations! :) User:Dzylon/SigReal
An extreme thanks to all that nominated me, to Dzylon for giving me the provisions that go with becoming an admin, and to Brandon Rhea for approving of the nomination in the end! I'll be sure to serve the wiki to the best of my ability as I have in the past, and for as long as I can in the future. ^^

New Banner

Hey, I'm currently working on the new main page design. If you still have it, could you send me the original main page banner (without the buttons for the imagemap)? Also, we may be using a wider banner that takes up the width of the page, but I'm not entirely sure of that yet.

Thanks, User:Dzylon/SigReal

By "original", do you mean Hero's, or my version? Because if you mean Hero's, I won't likely be able to do much about the buttons. :/ Otherwise, if you do mean mine, I can definitely get back to you in regards to the base design.

Hey, just wondering why you capitalized "very slow" and "average" in the Night's Edge article. Only titles for items and enemies/monsters should be capitalized. Quote: Speed changed from "Very Slow" to "Average".

Main reason being that the speeds themselves are capitalised ingame, and I was just keeping to those exact quotes.

When quoting sentences from the game, it's correct to let the capitalizing stay the same. However, the following: Speed changed from "Very Slow" to "Average" is not a quote from the game, and only the single adjectives are "quoted". Like I said, only titles from the game's content (items, monsters, environments..) should be capitalized. Adjectives should never be capitalized, unless when part of a citation.
Be that as it may, there is another element used throughout the wiki that follows that exact same principle: Infoboxes. Are not all instances of an item's speed (And knockback) capitalised in infoboxes?

Well it depends. I would personally rearrange the format because, well D/M/Y, but to look like ~~~~~ I would do {{SUBST:CURRENTTIME}}, {{SUBST:CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{SUBST:CURRENTDAY}}, {{SUBST:CURRENTYEAR}} (UTC) which would display 08:43, May 17, 2012 (UTC)
I Would also forget to sign my posts altogether. — Ilvandel (talk to me)   08:51, May 17, 2012 (UTC)

Continuing where we left off. That's another...issue, if you will. Yet another thing we need to be clear about in the Editing Policy. Infoboxes usually don't contain sentences, but instead a list of statistics and cue words. I therefore personally feel it's acceptable to capitalize things like "Crafted With" and "Very Slow," although I'd prefer if the same rules of capitalization applied here, and that we change the infobox-templates and edit the infoboxes accordingly. I'm asking Math for feedback regarding this subject.

In the article: The priority with articles is making them readable. Attributes such as very slow needn't be capitalized in the article. Full sentence, direct quotes from the game should be shown exactly as they appear in game. Item, monster and buff names (or plural forms of these nouns) should always be treated as proper nouns -- capitalized to help people identify these important entities. Besides these allowances, follow the general rules of English. (I wouldn't capitalize things referring to more general concepts: i.e. environments, hellevator, attributes, obsidian generator, etc.)
In infoboxes: Infoboxes are meant to display statistics at a glance, rules of English don't matter so much here. I'd be perfectly fine with both very slow and Very Slow in infoboxes, but Very Slow looks more professional and mirrors how it appears in in-game menus. In general, infoboxes aren't meant to be edited frequently -- there's no real concern on my part for setting "rules" for them. That's my opinion, at least. 20px_Rin_Tohsaka_Avatar.png Mathmagician ƒ(♫) 17:17 UTC, Thu, 17 May 2012

Hi there, and welcome to the wiki! Just a small piece of advice, as it may make it easier to communicate; if you wish you can create an account for use here on the wiki. Anyway, in regards to your problem: could I ask what your computer specs are? The main aspect I'd need to know is your Operating System, but other pieces of info may help. It does sound like it could be a Steam error, though that also depends; did you buy the Collector's Edition, or the normal Steam version?

Time travel + Summer 2012 anime season <-- Time traveler indeed! That's pretty cool =)

By the way, did you know summer anime season is starting? Here is my list so you can see what I'll be watching. This season is going to be sooo overkill on the fanservice =P. Oh and, Campione has quite possibly one of my favorite first episodes out of any anime ever. You should look into those shows if you want to watch any of them. Oh and if you have shows from this season not on that list, send them to me! Anyways, hope all's going well, 20px_Rin_Tohsaka_Avatar.png Mathmagician ƒ(♫) 06:55 UTC, Tue, 03 July 2012

Haha, that occurred after I edited my page on the Minecraft Wiki, then quickly switched back to the activity page. >.> My my, I do need to catch up on the flow of things, that and actually finish some of the anime I've started! But I do see some interesting ones on there, especially the Fairy Tail Movie and Dog Days. I didn't think that the fanservice could really be turned up much more! O.o I'll certainly look into Campione, and let's see...
Nothing really to suggest in regards to recently (Anywhere around mid-2012) aired shows, and I was going to suggest Railgun, but then I noticed you'd already watched it, as well as rated it at the same level as I have, haha. Anyway, I'd probably recommend Ao no Exorcist, as I thought it was very, very entertaining, as well as being nice and balanced with the action enclosed. You may be interested in FLCL/Furi Kuri; it's quite a random show, though I did think it was one of the funnier ones I've seen. I'll certainly be watching Mirai Nikki at some stage, looks quite good in many aspects. Another one you may like (and that I thought was quite good - despite the suddenly romantic scene, which didn't really fit the theme) is REDLINE. That's probably about it for now, heh. Doing quite well here, and the same goes for you; hope you're doing well! (Wall of Text mode disengage!)

To "send a pic privately" you'd have to upload it to an outside image host that's supported by the wiki. Some of those hosts are ImageShack, TinyPic, Picasa Web Albums (Hosted by Google), and a few others. My personal recommendation would be Picasa, as it's easier to link pictures from it, said images are organised in a much cleaner fashion, it has a very high storage allowance and also no bandwidth limit.

Weapons infobox refactoring proposal

  1. I've noticed that, to use Excalibur infobox as an example, it says: Use Time: 24 (Fast) and Knockback: Average (4.5). Seems inconsistent to have the number come first on one, but second on the other. Could you change it so that it says Use Time: 24 (Fast) and Knockback: 4.5 (Average) -- I think it makes most sense to always have the number come first.
  2. I'd like to change Base Damage: <number> to something like Damage: <number> <icon> (Base Rating). I feel that a tiny image (icon) next to the number would look cool. Also, changing the left column from "Base Damage" to just "Damage" would make it fit on a single line.
  3. Continuous Attack parameter could possibly evolve into something more descriptive. For example, instead of just "yes" or "no", maybe we could change the parameter to "Attack" and the descriptive values could be a list of any combination of...
    • "Continuous Attack" (hold down mouse button)
    • "Moonwalk" (walk backwards while swinging sword forward)
    • "Multiple Hits" (can hit multiple enemies with a single swing)
    • "Penetrates Target" (bullets pass through initial target and can hit enemies behind)
    • "Consumes Ammo" (requires ammunition to use)
    • "Consumes Mana" (requires mana to use)

Let me know what you think. 20px_Rin_Tohsaka_Avatar.png Mathmagician ƒ(♫) 09:30 UTC, Thu, 12 July 2012

Hmm, I like a few of those proposals, though I do have a couple of things to nitpick about others:
  1. I agree wholeheartedly on this one, and will change it. (The only reason it was originally set this was was because Knockback is normally looked up by the word value, and Use Time by the number value, from what I've seen.)
  2. I partially agree on this one. I do agree that a little Icon would be aesthetically pleasing, and could be added quite easily. In regards to that, my thoughts are below:
    • Have a switch implemented on a new parameter that combines with damage, such as damage type. From that, we could specify different images that depend on the damage type chosen. This would be quite aesthetically pleasing in my opinion, as well as being informative and also making redundant the need to specify damage types in damage.
    • The main reason I originally changed "Damage" to "Base Damage" was because of the amount of people changing the damage values on pages when their items had a modified damage amount. (Due to Accessories or a prefix on the item.) I can change the text back, if the need arises, but that was my reasoning behind changing it in the first place. In saying that; I could place a link on the text "Damage" that links to a section on the damage page. That section would detail the difference between "Final Damage" and "Base Damage" - Your thoughts on those?
  3. This I also partially agree on:
    • "Continuous Attack" - This one would have to be added without question.
    • "Moonwalk" - I agree that this one should be added as well, as not many weapons/items really feature it. It would also save making a whole Trivia/Note entry in the article stating it.
    • I disagree that "Multiple Hits" should be added, as almost any broadsword and spear supports it; if the swing speed is low enough, or if the distance between the player and the target is just right.
    • I agree that "Penetrates Target" should be added. This is an important feature and having it in the infobox would greatly improve readability, imo.
    • "Consumes Ammo/Mana" - I disagree that these two should be added. If an item/weapon uses mana, it is pretty definite that the Mana Cost will be specified in the infobox, even in this case. Ammo is a separate case, however; in that I think it should be modified to state the type of ammo used by the weapon, as well as being accompanied by the icon of said ammo.
Jeez I really went all-out there in Wall of Text mode, didn't I? Heh. An opinionated reply is waited eagerly for. :D 2016_wikia_image_template.png  iPathos | Talk Page | Thu 12 July 2012, 09:48
Funny, I was actually going to propose something similar to number 2 today. I too think that some infobox parameters could be shortened to one line. My proposal is as following:
Change "Base Damage" to "Damage" with a "help cursor." (The bad thing about this however is that you have to hold your mouse cursor pretty steadily in order for the description not to go away. Maybe there is another code that can do this better.) Something like either one of the following:
  • Damage
  • Damage (?)
There are some other parameters that this could be implemented into as well, and I also had some other thoughts on infobox-changes, but I'll have to come back to that later, as I'm going out now.
Additionally, I agree with Path that "consumes ammo/mana" and "multiple hits" are unnecessary.
3) Would a broadsword then be listed as "Penetrates Target"?
2) I think Leet-Pete's suggestion about having a help icon will work great. I also think that we need a page somewhere that explains how our infoboxes work. What we really should do is improve the template documentation (like put an example infobox in the documentation) and add a link to the template (same idea as how navigation boxes on other wikis have v (view) d (discuss) e (edit) links). 20px_Rin_Tohsaka_Avatar.png Mathmagician ƒ(♫) 17:53 UTC, Thu, 12 July 2012
@Leet-Pete: I do like the idea of a help cursor, though I don't see what you mean by "hold your mouse cursor pretty steadily in order for the description to not go away" as the only time it goes away, for me, is when I mouse over the description box itself, or if I move the mouse off of the help icon link.
@Math: 3) I can't actually see why it would be, as if anything; broadswords would be multiple-hit weapons.
2) I do agree on this, and will likely implement the "v, d, e" links within the next few days. 2016_wikia_image_template.png  iPathos | Talk Page | Fri 13 July 2012, 00:33

It seems to be browser-related; I use Firefox, but in Internet Explorer it isn't an issue for me. The thing is if I move the cursor eight pixels away from the point when the help cursor displays, it disappears (even though I hold the cursor over the text).

The "v, d, e" links is a good idea, but as it is now, in some cases it clashes with the name of the respective subject (example: Clockwork Assault Rifle).
Thanks for linking me that page Pete, I tried out several long page titles before submitting the change to make sure this sort of thing didn't happen, but it seems that "Clockwork Assault Rifle" is just a little too long. I'll attempt to change the top and side padding to make it a little more aesthetically correct. 2016_wikia_image_template.png  iPathos | Talk Page | Sat 14 July 2012, 10:01
Maybe you could place "v, d, e" on a new line and decrease the padding on the bottom, so that the padding remains as it is now?
You don't really need "d" and "e" links. On this wiki, nobody is going to discuss templates on their talk pages. Edit isn't really needed either. I'd just leave the "v", that takes up minimal space and is sufficient. 20px_Rin_Tohsaka_Avatar.png Mathmagician ƒ(♫) 21:10 UTC, Sat, 14 July 2012
Also, I didn't realize this before: it looks like you created a {{Navbar/left}} template. That's fine, but I would like to advise against such a name in the future. /left is typically indicative of a subpage. If possible, I think it's best to only use "/" in article/template/etc. names if it actually is a subpage. In this case, {{Navbar/left}} is not a subpage of {{Navbar}}, which is potentially confusing. 20px_Rin_Tohsaka_Avatar.png Mathmagician ƒ(♫) 00:30 UTC, Sun, 15 July 2012

Abuse log

Hey, I saw you noted here "four attempts at page blanking". I just wanted to let you know that it was actually only 2 -- warn and disallow are two different actions taken every time that particular abuse filter is tripped, and the log actually records both of those actions as separate entries. So basically, 2 entries in the log can result from the same event, so if you're trying to quantify, counting the entries can give you an inaccurate count. Make sure to check the descriptions =) 20px_Rin_Tohsaka_Avatar.png Mathmagician ƒ(♫) 17:01 UTC, Mon, 16 July 2012

Thanks for informing me of that, Math. Though I do have to say; it seems a bit off that the first two instances, the second of which should supposedly have happened instantaneously after the first, had different timestamps - albeit that the difference was a mere one minute. This was what lead me to believe that they were separate incidents. 2016_wikia_image_template.png  iPathos | Talk Page | Mon 16 July 2012, 19:12

Noted, thanks for informing me, Pete and Math. Also, could I ask the two of you to check out the latest addition to the Weapons Infobox over on Fortesting? Specifically, the Clockwork Assault Rifle, Excalibur and the Rainbow Rod? Thanks.
2016_wikia_image_template.png  iPathos | Talk Page | Tue 17 July 2012, 06:17
Just because something has been done many times before, it doesn't mean it's the right way of doing it. No edits should be reverted purely on this basis. Being consistent in the ways of doing things is all good, but it should never come before the usage of correct grammar. (The only reason I say this is that you were defending your revert of an edit that was grammatically correct, so I hope you don't feel like I'm nitpicking.)
I'd also appreciate it if you took my words as seriously as you take Mathmagician's. I understand that you two are pals and that you may have higher thoughts of Math and more respect for him, and that's fine (we haven't talked much after all). But it gets a little bit frustrating when I say something and you disregard it, then Math says something similar and you reply in a much more cooperative manner.
I hope I don't come off as angry or anything like that, and I'm not trying to point fingers, my intentions are just for the better of the wiki. All I want is for everyone to be treated equally and that no argument gets rejected or taken into consideration judged by who says it. I also really think you do a lot of great work on the wiki, both as an admin and as a contributor, so please don't take this the wrong way. -Rant of the day over- :)

(Reset indent) To explain a couple of things:

  • At the time I had quite the migraine, and immediately after that second reply, I went to bed. I'd rather not be in such a foul mood while on the wiki.
  • True, I am pals with Math, though; over everything else around here my concern is for the wellbeing of the wiki and community. I've felt this way since before Gracey and Hero had their little "spat" that we're all quite well-aware of.
  • Also, I never actually claimed that it was the right way of doing it, I merely stated it went against the current wiki-wide standard - Nothing more. I deduced that from opening ten random tabs (using the Random Page link, of course, until I had ten pages from around the normal Main: namespace that featured the UpdateInfo template) and made my assumption from that.
  • And again, I didn't revert the edit saying that it was grammatically correct, I reverted it on the grounds that it went against the standard throughout the wiki.

Please do check order and choice of words used before making these claims, Pete. I do acknowledge that my edit was misjudged, though 'twas on different grounds than what you claimed. Also, as you said, I'm sorry if I come across as angry. I just wanted to clear a couple of things up there. Don't want you thinking the same of me as Gracey now does (As he thought that I took Hero's side in their argument, though nowhere was there any evidence of such side-taking, plus I had Dzylon as a witness to the convos). Heh. :)

I don't see how my claim is unfair, and what you just said kinda proves my point. Why? Because you're saying that you were clueless as to whether or not the edit you reverted was correct, but you still made the decision to revert it, simply based on "it has been done many times before, so it seems like a standard throughout the wiki." Like I said; no edits should be reverted on this basis alone, without any knowledge of whether the edit is correct or not. Do you really think that this is a solid basis to have when reverting edits? Because you still seem to be defending yourself. That being said, I appreciate that you admit the decision was misjudged, and my only point to this whole thing was that one should take a little bit more care into the decision of reverting edits. We all make mistakes, we are human after all. I was simply hoping for an agreement on the matter of being careful not to revert "good quality" edits. And it's not like you're the first one to do this, I've done it a few times myself. It's just a lesson I've learned from my own mistakes, while it also sometimes helps to receive a reminder from others, for me at least.
