== General Strategies == === General Tips === {{transclude|Guide:Practical tips#Combat}} === Terrain Preparation === Do not attempt to fight the Pirate Invasion in an open space during early Hardmode. The amount of enemies coupled with their abundant projectiles will quickly overwhelm an inexperienced or underequipped player. Instead, consider some simple preparation. With a secure, enclosed space, the event can be made easy. Simply construct a box-shaped building on or off the ground. When inside the box, no enemies will be able to reach the player. Attacking enemies will require weapons that can attack around or through blocks. If the player does not possess such weapons, their only option will be to place holes in the walls and fire projectiles through them, taking care not to be hit by enemy projectiles. It is best to place these holes in ceilings or floors to make it harder for ground enemies to fire into them. The Flying Dutchman cannot pass through blocks, so it will remain stuck against the walls of the box where the player can easily destroy its cannons. Do note that the Pirate's Curses, with trap immunity and the ability to fly through blocks, will be a large threat to those in shelter. It can help to make the shelter larger for space to dodge and fight the Curse. === Gearing Up === ==== Armor ==== * {{item|Palladium Breastplate|Palladium Armor|scale=0.6}} can be used with the corresponding head piece for regeneration. * {{item|Orichalcum Breastplate|Orichalcum Armor|scale=0.6}} can be used with the corresponding head piece for crowd control. * {{item|Titanium Breastplate|Titanium Armor|scale=0.6}} gives the most defense and should be used with the corresponding head piece. * If one does not mind hybrid sets, warriors and rangers should use the{{item|Frost Breastplate|scale=0.6}}, {{item|Forbidden Treads|scale=0.6}}, and their corresponding {{item|Adamantite Helmet|Adamantite Head piece|Adamantite armor|scale=0.6}}. * A mage can use the {{item|Wizard Hat|Wizard Set|scale=0.6}} with the {{item|Forbidden Treads|scale=0.6}}, however, this is very frail. Otherwise, a wizard should use {{item|Adamantite Headgear|Adamantite armor|scale=0.6}} if the other sets are unavailable. * A summoner should use {{item|Spider Mask|Spider Armor|scale=0.6}} with the {{item|Forbidden Treads|scale=0.6}}. Summon all minions with Spider armor, then switch to the Treads for one more. ==== Weapons ==== ====== For Melee Users ====== * The {{item|Titanium Sword|scale=0.6}} is useful as it has high damage. If it is unavailable, the {{item|Adamantite Sword|scale=0.6}} can be used. The {{item|Ice Sickle|scale=0.6}} is also useful. * The {{item|Amarok|scale=0.6}} is useful due to the {{item|Frostburn|Frostburn Debuff|scale=0.6}}. Yoyos as a whole are useful for attacking from within shelter, though they have limited range. * The {{item|Adamantite Glaive|scale=0.6}} and the {{item|Titanium Trident|scale=0.6}} are good piercing weapons. * The {{item|Flying Knife|scale=0.6}} is useful for attacking from within a safe box. * The {{item|Dao of Pow|scale=0.6}} can be used to disrupt enemy lines due to the {{item|Confused|Confused Debuff|scale=0.6}}. * The {{item|Shadowflame Knife|scale=0.6}} can be used at range against both crowds and single targets, but requires the defeat of a [[Goblin Summoner]] during the Hardmode [[Goblin Army]]. ====== For Ranged Users ====== * The {{item|Marrow|scale=0.6}} and the {{item|Ice Bow|scale=0.6}} (with {{item|Cursed Arrow|s|scale=0.6}} or {{item|Venom Arrow|s|scale=0.6}}) are all good bows. Even the {{item|Hellwing Bow|scale=0.6}} (with the {{item|Endless Quiver|scale=0.6}}) is still useful due to its infinite pierce. ** The {{item|Daedalus Stormbow|scale=0.6}} (with {{item|Holy Arrow|s|scale=0.6}}) is especially useful because it can attack from shelter. ** The {{item|Adamantite Repeater|scale=0.6}} and {{item|Titanium Repeater|scale=0.6}} (with the {{item|Endless Quiver|scale=0.6}}) can be used if the stronger bows are unavailable. * The {{item|Clockwork Assault Rifle|scale=0.6}} (with {{item|Crystal Bullet|s|scale=0.6}} or {{item|Ichor Bullet|s|scale=0.6}}), the {{item|Onyx Blaster|scale=0.6}} (with {{item|Ichor Bullet|s|scale=0.6}}), the {{item|Phoenix Blaster|scale=0.6}}, the {{item|Star Cannon|scale=0.6}}, and the {{item|Uzi|scale=0.6}} (with the {{item|Endless Musket Pouch|scale=0.6}}) are excellent choices. The {{item|Megashark|scale=0.6}} (with the {{item|Endless Musket Pouch|scale=0.6}}) is even better if [[The Destroyer]] has been defeated. * The {{item|Dart Rifle|scale=0.6}} / {{item|Dart Pistol|scale=0.6}} and the {{item|Toxikarp|scale=0.6}} are great for debuffs. Use {{item|Ichor Dart|s|scale=0.6}} for single targets, {{item|Cursed Dart|s|scale=0.6}} for singular enemies, and {{item|Crystal Dart|s|scale=0.6}} for crowds. The {{item|Flamethrower|scale=0.6}} is also good if one has beaten [[Skeletron Prime]]. ====== For Magic Users ====== * The {{item|Flower of Frost|scale=0.6}} is useful for debuffs. The {{item|Flower of Fire|scale=0.6}} is a weaker version. * The {{item|Life Drain|scale=0.6}} is great against crowds, while the {{item|Clinger Staff|scale=0.6}} is useful for barriers. The {{item|Nimbus Rod|scale=0.6}} can be used for damaging passersby. The {{item|Frost Staff|scale=0.6}} is also good. * The {{item|Golden Shower|scale=0.6}}, the {{item|Cursed Flames|scale=0.6}}, and the {{item|Crystal Storm|scale=0.6}} are all good weapons for debuffs and rapid damage respectively. The {{item|Demon Scythe|scale=0.6}} can be used for close combat. * The {{item|Sky Fracture|scale=0.6}} is a very powerful weapon and can deal high damage to both crowds and single targets. However, it requires a {{item|Magic Missile|scale=0.6}}, necessitating exploration of the [[Dungeon]]. * The {{item|Medusa Head|scale=0.6}} can attack multiple enemies at once if obtained. * The {{item|Spirit Flame|scale=0.6}} has homing and powerful damage. * The {{item|Crystal Serpent|scale=0.6}} is good against crowds. * The {{item|Unholy Trident|scale=0.6}} is a good weapon, but it is dropped by deadly {{item|Red Devil|s|scale=0.6}}. * The {{item|Crystal Vile Shard|scale=0.6}} is weak and possesses limited range, but attacks directly through blocks and is useful for attacking enemies stuck outside the player's shelter. ====== For Summoners ====== * The {{item|Spider Staff|scale=0.6}} is available early, and a solid improvement over the Pre-Hardmode options, especially with the spiders' ability to latch onto enemies (putting walls behind the arena can make the spiders more mobile). If the [[Dreadnautilus]] has been defeated, the [[Sanguine Staff]] is a very powerful option. * For sentries, one should use the {{item|Queen Spider Staff|scale=0.6}} as it is the best one available. ==== Potions ==== * Any food that gives the {{item|Well Fed|Well Fed buff|scale=0.6}} gives minor stat buffs to everything.
